Skate Ski (Snowgaine Day 2) 6:50:00 [3] 23.0 km (17:50 / km)

Did entire north section of map, so ended up missing just what we skipped Saturday in the far SE corner. Skis were a pain to carry at times, but made great time when we could use them (busted tail of one ski). Many controls were down in reentrants and could only be reached on snowshoes. 10.5 km ski, 9.5 km snowshoe, 3 km road run.
Ended up 1st masters and 3rd overall.
Great weather for the weekend and good snow. Thanks Ann and Sandy for the fine event!

Skate Ski (Snowgaine) 6:55:00 [3] 23.0 km (18:03 / km)

Hammond Hill and Yellow Barn, NY. Some ski, some snowshoe. Will figure distance later. With Charlie Leonard. Kept a strong pace all day and got all the controls in the most difficult section (SW) of the map plus a bunch others in the upper SE. Didn't get to far SE corner due to time limit of
hours.
16km ski, 7 km snowshoe

Skate Ski (Mixed) 40:00 [2] 5.0 km (8:00 / km)

Hammond Hill, NY. Checking wax around Charlie Leonard's. Soft granular, which will freeze overnight -- purple klister!

Skate Ski (Warm up/cool down) 16:00 [3] 3.0 km (5:20 / km)

Skate Ski (Skate -- night) 34:50 [5] 10.0 km (3:29 / km)

Lightly tilled track leaving a granular, fast surface. Tempo workout with a hard push on the last 5 km.
Split 18:20/16:30 with 3:10 for last km loop.

Wednesday Feb 25, 2004 #

Skate Ski (Warm-up) 12:00 [3] 2.0 km (6:00 / km)

Skate Ski (Skate) 37:50 [3] 10.0 km (3:47 / km)

Surface frozen and choppy. Still fast, but rough.

Tuesday Feb 24, 2004 #

Skate Ski (Skate) 23:00 [3] 4.0 km (5:45 / km)

Warm up/cool down. Two laps in the fields and woods, and then a lap with no poles at the end.

Skate Ski (Skate) 35:45 [4] 10.0 km (3:35 / km)

Pretty high intensity. Snow has set up so it's fast. V2 for most of the laps. Wish I had this kind of snow at the Birkie.

Saturday Feb 21, 2004 #

Skate Ski (Birkebeiner Race) 4:20:53 [4] 51.0 km (5:07 / km)

Fast on flats. Started in the 6th wave, so uphills were churned up and had 4" of loose snow. Made the skating up them quite tiring and slow.
Splits 10km: 55:37 / 53:15 / 48:53 / 52:15 / 50:51(10.3)
Half hour faster than last year, but had been looking to break 4 hours.
YTD 744 km

Skate Ski (Skate) 22:00 [2] 4.0 km (5:30 / km)

Checked out the Birkie course at OO Road with Brad Whitmore and Ruthie. Wax ok, but course just got 6" new snow which is not well packed. Ran into Brian May and family trying out course as well.

Skate Ski (Yosemite, CA) 4:15:00 [2] 34.0 km (7:30 / km)

Skate from Badger Pass out to Glacier Point. Road fully groomed for 10 km and then just skier packed past that: classic skiing on skate skiis with just glide wax. Had klister, but didn't want to gum up the bottoms. Greg tried it and had good luck.
Great view from Glacier Point -- Half Dome covered with snow. No one else out there -- try that in the summer!

Road Running (Santa Monica, CA) 26:00 [3] 2.5 mi (10:24 / mi)

What's this, running? In the foothills above LA with Greg and Ruthie. Feel like a slug, haven't run in 2 months.

Saturday Feb 14, 2004 #

Skate Ski (Skate) 1:13:00 [3] 14.0 km (5:13 / km)

10 km in fields and 4 thru woods. Technique day, practicing V2 along with V1 and V1alt. Warm, almost near freezing. Snow grooming up well; just have 1/2 km on the hill left to pack wide enough for skating.

Thursday Feb 12, 2004 #

Skate Ski (Night -- Skate) 26:00 [2] 5.0 km (5:12 / km)

Couple laps up thru the Pines and Ravine, and then 2 quick ones around the fields.

Wednesday Feb 11, 2004 #

Skate Ski (Skate) 39:00 [4] 10.0 km (3:54 / km)

A couple days rest and the rib felt much better. Snow was freshly groomed and fast fine granular, so did a short but fast workout.

Sunday Feb 8, 2004 #

Skate Ski (Mixed) 43:00 [2] 4.0 km (10:45 / km)

Packed 8-10" of snow that came down Friday with the snowmobile and groomer. Then skied around the Pines and Ravine to see how they're coming along. The newly packed snow needs to set up and then it all should be good skiing. Today everything was still soft, including the Fields tracks.

Skate Ski (Tug Hill Tourathon) 4:42:53 [4] 50.0 km (5:39 / km)

50km race looping twice around Tug Hill south of the CCC camp. Only classic allowed.

Misty rain and high 20's down in Sandy Creek where we had to wax. On top of hard track this was purple and silver klister. Got up to start and it was snowing. Quick, layer on the VR45 hard wax. Oops, icing up. Another layer of VR50 warmer wax. Better, but still grabbing. Yikes, the race is ready to start. Off we go, sticking and sliding. 3km in, grind to a stop with a big brick of snow under the skis. Take them off, scrape off the snow and ice underneath. Smear the wax with my fingers to cover up the klister. Still grabbed a few times, but able to scrape off the ice on the downhills and crossing over sticks. By the end of the first loop the temp had changed enough so all was okay. Glide still not the best, but could climb up anything.

Ended up 27th overall and about 5th in my age group. Splits 2:19/2:24

Wednesday Feb 4, 2004 #

Note

Taking it easy for a couple days. Decided the ribs won't heal unless I stop skiing. Hard to do with 8" new snow outside. Still planning on the 50km this Sat.

Skate Ski (Classic) 51:50 [3] 10.0 km (5:11 / km)

Ribs felt ok, so started to push it; that was a mistake -- no more double poling! I guess you need more than one day for recovery. Got dark for the last 2 laps and had to slow a bit (didn't bring headlamp -- it's starting to stay light now until 5:40).
Warmest weather in a month, up to 27F. Used VR45 but track was slick and kick didn't kick too hot.

Skate Ski (Grooming) 53:00 [2] 4.0 km (13:15 / km)

A few laps arond the Pines and the fields to clean up sticks from the trail. Groomed out the classic track and made skate lane. With 24F and windblown cover, snow conditions are great.

Skate Ski (Skate) 40:43 [4] 10.0 km (4:04 / km)

Fairly intense workout to loosen up from Sat. Skating uses different muscles than classic, so didn't feel tired until the end.
After workout groomed a classic track back in the trail so I can train for the 50km classic at Tug Hill this weekend.
