Orienteering (Woods) 24:00 [2] **
11c shoes: Oroc 340

Checking and hanging for MOJO at S-F (1:10).

Warmed up by jogging the Orange course.

Then ran Red at close to competition effort. Nav was pretty clean. Despite having no legs from yesterady, I would have been quite happy to have this run in an A-meet. Most of the control sites are pretty distinct, but if I was in doubt, I dropped a golf ball so I could check later if I had hit the right spot. Turns out I was right on all of them. It will be interesting to see how that time holds up next weekend. As this was my first time at S-F since last spring, I think it's a fairly legit time (though, as both course setter and mapper, I obviously had a few advantages).

Then putting out all the markers at an easy pace. Changed shoes to give my heel a break. As of this evening, it seems OK, though I can feel it a bit. Will have to go out early Saturday and put out the e-punch units on RGO, but that shouldn't take as long since there will be no time spent validating the location.

Running (Road) 45:00 [2]
shoes: Grid A2

Parked at work and jogged downtown to the start area. Then did another couple miles including some striders to warmup.

Running race (Road) 30:36 [5] 5.0 mi (6:07 / mi)
shoes: Grid A2

St. Pats 5mi. Been a while since I've done a huge race like this. Freaked me out a bit. Had one of the fancy orange numbers, so congestion wasn't a problem (roughly 13,000 entrants). Whole first mile I felt really stressed. Headwind and net uphill (albeit not much) through mile 2, so I was well off 6:00 pace at halfway. I don't know my splits because for some reason the miles weren't marked. Brought it in reasonably well, but a sub-30 just wasn't going to happen. Given that my training is targeting races an order of magnitude longer, I'm not really bummed. 4th M45. Something like 50th overall.

Running (Road) 52:00 [2]
shoes: DS Trainers

Longish warmdown to clear my head a bit. I'm still not sure why I got so psyched out about this. Maybe it was starting with the elites, or maybe it's just been a long time since I've run in a quality field. Anyway, I needed to unwind.

Terrain (Grass) 34:00 [2]
shoes: DS Trainers

Back to the car after awards. Ran in the grass as I was feeling some of the heel trouble that bit me after the half a few weeks back.

Orienteering (Woods) 39:00 [2] ***
8c (rest day) shoes: Oroc 340

Great day to ride. So great, that I decided to drive and remove the temptation to do something silly and cook my legs with a 3-hour ride home. Stopped by Queeny for another light green session after work. Similar to last week except I used a map this time and kept my foot off the gas. Tried to focus on picking out deer tracks and other corridors of easier passage while staying in contact with the map and not straying too far off redline.

Fun session. Maybe productive. I don't really know and I'm not sure I care. It's already mid-march and I've done almost no nav training this year. Clearly, this is going to be another write-off year for orienteering. Maybe I'll get on form for some good races in the fall.

Running (Track) 54:00 [4]
shoes: Grid A2

5x700@2:35 350R. Dial-in for Saturday (6:00/mi). Actually on the sidewalk around Lafayette Park, which is conveniently 350x350m with an accurate midpoint at 175m, so it's almost as much feedback as running on the track. Only difference is the turns are a bit sharper and there's a slight elevation change. Still, a great place to do repeats at lunch.

First track workout in a long time that really felt right. Firm effort, but in control the whole time. Not sure if I'll be able to hold it for 5 miles, but I see no reason not to try.

Cycling (Road) 1:13:00 [2]
shoes: Bike:Felt CX SS

Home from work via a fairly direct route since I got out late. Put a bit of pressure on the pedals as the West wind has returned from break and seems quite determined to catch up on it's work. If the mist had turned into real rain, it might have been pretty unpleasant. As it was, the wet chill was somewhat refreshing.

Easy spin in to work. Wind still out of the SE made things slow, but not too cold. Been blowing from that direction for nearly a week. The clouds are still moving west to east like they're supposed to. Wierd.

Bike was at work over the weekend again. Drove in. Another fine day, albeit slightly chilly, and legs felt surprisingly good so I was sorely tempted to take a longer route home. However, recovery is a big part of training, so I contented myself with a few extra miles in Forest Park and then came straight back.
