Terrain (Trail) 33:00 [2]

Warmup.

Orienteering race (Park) 21:14 [4] *** 4.7 km (4:31 / km)
16c

OK "Long Sprint" at JCCC (1:5). Ran a firm pace, but held back just a bit so I wouldn't trash my lungs for tomorrow. Reasonably clean run. A bit hesitant in a few places. 3rd overall, 1st M40.

Terrain (Trail) 21:00 [2]

Warmed down with Anna.

Orienteering (Park) 16:00 [2] ***
4c

Picked up a few controls.

Running (Trainer) 30:00 [2]

With this morning ridiculously frosty for December, I talked the folks at the fitness club at work into letting me run on the treadmill rather than going outside. The dry air indoors was probably just as bad for my lungs, but I didn't cough much during the workout and feel OK now. Hopefully, it was just some irritation and won't be a factor this weekend. Aside from the cough, I have no other symptoms indicating illness.

Frosty (for these parts anyway), but no rain. Figured I could do some control picking at Babler (1:15) without making the lungs any worse. Good nav in the open stuff, not so much in the light green. Nothing terrible, just sloppiness due to lack of focus. Can't let that happen this weekend.

weight:166lbs (rest day)

No surprise that I had a bit of a cough after last weekend's cold races. However, it's a little disconcerting that it hasn't gone away - might be a symptom of something more serious than hard breathing. Whatever the problem, a workout in the cold rain didn't seem like the solution, so I drove to work. Sounded like a good idea, but the CD changer served up the Blues collection that Soupbone put together for the Chicago meet. Suddenly overcome with a need to not be a middle-aged white engineer, I turned it up to 11 (gratuitous Spinal Tap ref) for Mustang Sally and now I have a sore throat as well as a cough.

Cycling (Road) 1:11:00 [2]

In to work on the Redline. As it's still outfitted with full knobbies and a 51" gear, it took a bit longer than usual. I'll hit Big Shark on the way home and remedy both of those conditions. I'm thinking 700x40 CX tires and a 64" gear. The bigger problem is what to do with my hands. Even with lobster gloves, they were pretty frozen by the time I got in. Granted, if it was any colder than today (24F), I'd take the bus, but I'd like to be able to ride comfortably in the mid 20's.

Cycling (Road) 1:30:00 [2]

Back home, still in the 51. Did pick up a set of 700x35's at Big Shark. They're a bit on the light side, but I'm hoping they'll be tough enough.

Orienteering (Woods) 1:36:00 [2] **
22c

Second work from home day approved so now I don't have to go in on Mondays or Thursdays. None too soon as the weather went to hell this morning. By midday it was still frosty, but otherwise nice, so I got in the vetting for the Castlewood 8-hour. Typical AR control locations: trails, streams, big reentrants. The competent teams should have no trouble.

Terrain (Grass) 35:00 [2]

With legs a bit stiff from yesterday (I may have been rough on the nav, but I still ran it pretty hard), I took a longer than usual warmup.

Terrain race (Grass) 13:21 [5] 2.1 mi (6:21 / mi)

Bubba XC at Queeny. Wore my O shoes rather than cross counrty spikes since there were some slick downhills with the light snow from last night melting. Partially frozen ground yeilded a fairly fast, albeit hilly, track. With no reason to save my legs, I hammered this one best I could. Actually a pretty decent run - I give it a 5 for the big push in the last K that almost nipped another position. Fifth overall, 1st M40 to sweep the series.

Terrain (Trail) 1:48:00 [2]

Then went for a run on the trails. Swung back by the cyclocross course midway through to see David win the C race. The super-slick conditions certainly suited a bike-handling specialist like him - I watched him pass one rider on a descent into a switchback where he was literally going TWICE AS FAST as the other guy. Seriously, the other rider was halfway between David and the turn and David passed him on the outside and beat him to the apex. Amazing. Jeff and Rudy also rode well.
