Orienteering race 1:19:26 [4] *** 8.3 km (9:34 / km) +225m 8:26 / km

ACT long championships at Boboyan Divide. After the last two days didn't hold out a lot of hope for a good run and set off fairly conservatively. Soon realised that the fallen timber meant that running round along the edge of the yellow was a good way to get through the longer legs. Went well if a little slowly through the first six controls, with just a bit of hesitation on 4 crossing parallel bands of rock. After 6 chose a longish route right to use the cleared areas that led almost to 7, slowed a bit through the green on a hilltop and hit the control. On the long leg from 8-9 again decided to use the cleared areas which also led to a good attackpoint rather than coming straight over a hill. Got a bit distracted coming out of 8 and pushed around by the bush, but once I hit the open was going well and spiked the control. Picked up Magne Knudsen who'd started somewhere in front of me here so felt like I was going well, went ahead of him to 10, but he spotted the flag first, this was reversed at 11 when he passed the flag but I'd spotted it. Still with him through 12 and 13, then he did a face plant coming down the hill to 14, checked he was OK then carried on. Thought I'd read the map well into 15, but didn't see the boulder and probably dropped a minute here, think this was the worst mistake in the circle today. From here was it easy running and spiked the last 7 controls. Overall was happy with the run, maybe lost about 5 mins altogether on route choice and in the circle. As the only bandit on the course in the absence of dreaded and acejase also became ACT M35 champion. Much better end to the weekend than I expected.

Started off well, contact with the map seemed pretty good, then got to 3 and must have been slightly off line and spent 8 mins relocating twice off a nearby track. Got back into it after that then similar problems at 10, a termite mound near a rock slab. A bit tentative crossing gullies but got the slab looked in the direction of the termite mound and couldn't see anything, decided I had fitted the map to wherever I was so relocated off a nearby watercourse - back to the same slab .... almost called it a day at that point but went off in the direction of the control and after going past it spotted the flag, lost about 10mins here. Rest of the course was slow but hit the controls. Expect I was still last - hopefully it won't be a trifecta tomorrow.

ACT sprint championships. Last time I orienteered was last October and it showed. Set off vaguely running in the direction of the first control and not suprisingly went straight past it, at least realised I'd gone too far and recovered losing about 30 seconds, was pretty similar thorugh the first hapf of the course , spiking some controls but not really getting the direction right. Messed 14 up completely misreading the map and eventually relocating at a track beyond the control. After that began to get into the map but was a bit too late with 5 controls to go, think I was last..... can only improve tomorrow!

Bilbys. This week was the VW set (10x 650m reps, 100 recovery). Wasn't feeling all that fresh despite the only activity in the last few days being a few rides to work. Splits: 2.24, 2.16, 2.21, 2.24, 2.24, 2.27, 2.27, 2.29, 2.29, 2.26. It was hard work getting to the end of the set.

Big Gaz did the run-throughs first then the stretches, had nicely cooled down by the start of the main set.
