Note

Petrified Forest and Painted Desert National Park today on our way from Mesa, AZ to Grants, NM.

Interesting drive today. We saw some light rain and snow, lots of big storm clouds all around us throughout the day, and deep snow as we passed over the mountains around Heber, AZ. There had been a few inches of new snow over night in the mountains so it was very beautiful to drive through. Amazing considering we were only 100 miles from Phoenix.

Family swim in Grants, NM.

Running Trail race 1:29:04 [4] 8.79 mi (10:08 / mi) +158m 9:36 / mi
ahr:160 max:171

"15k" McDowell Sonoran Challenge. Great trail run. Hillier than I was expecting, but with hindsight not surprising since we were running around the flanks of two mountains. Most of the trail was a gravel like surface that made for nice running. We had a few hundred feet of deep sand in a wash bottom, and another section of boulders. Since I have not been training to run nine mile races, it went better than I expected. I passed a few people on the long uphills on the back half and finished strong. 14th among the men, and 25th of 58 overall (winning time was 1:04:27).

The race is organized by a group that is trying to buy this area as a urban preserve for the city of Scottsdale. They have about half the land now, and if they get it all it will be about 56 square miles -- the largest urban preserve in the country, and 1/3 of Scottsdale. I hope they can get that done.

Nice ride with pas from his home in Mesa into Tonto National Forest. Trail surface was better than South Mountain Park, so the ride was more enjoyable. And the scenery is much better. Lots of mountains, great view of the Phoenix valley and beyond. Lots of desert plants and greenery. My kind of ride.

Cycling Mt Bike 1:15:00 [3] 10.5 mi (7:09 / mi)

Out and back on the Desert Classic trail in South Mountain Park in Phoenix, AZ. My wife's cousin took me out for a ride.

No big ups or downs on this ride. Lots of arroyos, a usually dry creek bed. Each one is a quick down, and then back up again. They range it height from 5 to 20 feet.

The big challenge was the rocks. On the trails I've been on in MN they purposely bury rocks in the middle of the trail to make it interesting. On this trail, there are rocks of every size throughout. I like my bike, but it is pretty much shockless and suspensionless. I couldn't keep up just because I couldn't go at a moderate pace on the rocks -- I'll be looking for a new bike later this year. There was plenty of smooth gravel too, and that was lots of fun.

On our way out it was nearly dark. We saw quite a few riders heading out with headlights on. Seemed a little crazy given all the cacti and rocks around, but I suppose they are used to it.

Lots of other trails to explore in the future.

Forgot my Garmin, so no tracks, but here is a map showing the park trails:

Family hike with Grampa. Pinnacle Peak trail out and back. A moderaterately hilly, desert hike. Perfect for us on this bright, sunny morning. It must be one of the busiest unpaved liesure trails in the world. We were there midday on a Tuesday, and there were many people on the trail. Great views of many nearby mountains.

Note

Not sure why my gps tracks are not getting downloaded from SportTracks anymore. I am downloading from a different computer with a slightly newer version of SportTracks, so maybe that is the problem.

Three laps inside LeisureWorld -- yes, that is what it is called. If you can get past the name, it's a pretty nice place. It is the retirement community that my in-laws live at in the winter months.

It's been raining the last couple days. During that time we saw a rainbow and lightning, and heard thunder -- three rare things in the Phoenix area. I went out just as the rain was stopping. Still a stiff wind coming from the north, but it felt good to be outside. Back and legs are still stiff.
