Note
(rest day)

Probably should have gone to the gym, but by the time I got home from work I was wiped out. I went to take a nap and was in bed for three hours. Just went for dinner after that and then back to bed.
Tracks from the weekend are added now.

Flying Pig Middle at Ransburg Scout Camp. Another pretty clean race. Accidentally stopped my watch at number 3, so some of the track is missing. One big error at number 3. Lost about 2:20. This was my worst error of the weekend and it was all from rushing to the meet site.

I always try to read the event info before running on the morning of each race. Today I was running a little later because of trip to church before the meet. So, even though I had skimmed today's event notes previously, I never really read them in depth. On the way to number 3, my attackpoint was a building on the top of a long hill. I got up there and was right next to a small shelter. I looked at it, thought "Hmm, I wonder if this is mapped as a building. It doesn't have any walls." I looked around and didn't see any other building, so I decided this must be it. Had I read the event notes I would have known that it WASN'T mapped and would have looked harder for the real building. The outcome was that I took a pretty careful attack from the wrong spot. Ended up where there was not any control. I then saw the control a ways away to my left, but it was far enough away and didn't look like it matched the terrain the way I expected, so I spent a while scratching my head before going over there to check it out.

Lesson: Don't forget to read the event info on the morning of the race!

Nice open woods again, by the end of the race I was feeling tired, but given the amount of climb over the weekend, I think my preparation over the winter really paid off. Once again the course was not as technical as I would have liked. Not a lot of opportunities to make big mistakes. Most of it was more like a wooded sprint than a middle.

Overall, a successful pig weekend. Third overall in F-50+ which shows I still need to figure out how to get faster. Time for more intervals and off-trail running practice. Too bad we don't have enough actual woods out here.

WU/CD warm up/down 11:57 intensity: (2:20 @1) + (2:12 @2) + (1:44 @3) + (5:41 @4) 0.69 mi (17:20 / mi)

Flying Pig Long at Yellowwood State Forest. Another clean race. Another third place. I saw Erin at number 1 as I was leaving, but then not again until number 5. After that we were close until she passed me just before number 11. Saw h for the last time leaving number 12. The splits show me losing time on numbers 1 and 4 , but I don't really feel like I made errors there, so it might just be slow pace or less then optimum route. I went straight to one. To four, I went down the stream bed, then turned in the flat to cross the stream, then uphill to the trail and then ran to the saddle and attacked from there. Maybe better to climb straight to the saddle to reduce the climb? I messed up at number 12. I was climbing the indistinct trail to attack from above, but then I went off too soon and took a while to figure out I had to go further. Lost about 1 minute.

I didn't like this course as much as the sprint. A lot of crossing catching features made the course not too technical. I didn't really see very many route choice issues. Mostly run the trails, or go straight up and down. Usually the least climb was pretty obvious.

Model event at Yellowwood. Just hiked through it slowly to get a good handle on the terrain and mapping.

Orienteering race (Sprint) 25:53 intensity: (14 @1) + (9 @2) + (23 @3) + (10:33 @4) + (14:34 @5) ** 3.48 km (7:26 / km) +36m 7:04 / km

Flying Pig Sprint at Indiana University Campus. Had a really nice run today. Kept up good speed, looked ahead well to plan routes without running into obstacles. Attackpoint splits says I didn't lose any time. I really liked the course. Every time you got used to the style it changed up on you. Started kind of straightforward, then hit you with some route choice legs, then when you start getting tired all of a sudden you're in a wooded area with lots of controls that you can run pretty straight to, but need to keep track of which one you're headed for. Was hoping for a better placing, but since I really didn't make any mistakes I can't complain.

WU/CD warm up/down 7:23 intensity: (24 @1) + (44 @2) + (3 @3) + (5:03 @4) + (1:09 @5) 0.58 mi (12:44 / mi) +7m 12:17 / mi
