Orienteering race 1:50:22 [4] *** 5.72 km (19:18 / km) +235m 16:00 / km
spiked:5/11c

After claiming a few weeks ago that I would ramp up my training before the team trials, this meet really pointed out how I've failed miserably at that. Knowing that I wasn't really in shape for this physical of a course, I didn't push very hard and just tried to have a good time. I did very poorly with the terrain and was disappointed with my speed through it, even just walking. I started really feeling fatigued after about 45 minutes and slowed down a little bit to be sure I stayed smart and didn't trip too much. The mountain laurel seemed to bother me less than most. It's very tame compared to California Chapparal.

Biggest error was number 4 where I tried to bounce off of the large pond but never found it. I was having a lot of trouble keeping a bearing and locating myself on the map. I believe I went between the pond and the control and eventually hit the smaller ponds. Still unsure of where I was, I mistook this for the larger pond and headed up the hill. I figured out where I was when I hit the ridgeline sooner than expected. I also had trouble at number 7 where apparently did not climb as far up the spur as I thought before heading toward the control. I was contouring and then suddenly started climbing which I knew wasn't right. Then I ran into the green and figured out where I was. Didn't take too long to recover after that. At both 8 and 9 I overshot slightly within the circle and had to turn around to find the control. Pretty much everyone was faster than me today.

Orienteering (Trail O) 1:28:00 [1] ***
spiked:12/13c

Trail O Team Trials at West Point.
After a long night on the Red Eye I was pretty darn tired upon arriving at West Point. Since the Trail O Trials was the primary reason I had come, I figured it was better to rest up and be at my best for that, so I skipped the middle course and took a little nap. This was one of my best Trail O finishes in quite a while (only missed one, 3rd place on time alone) and I met my goal of securing a spot on the team. I'm very excited to be taking my first overseas trip and attending my first WOC since the US hosted in 1993.

A very nice trail O course with a lot of good challenges and one controversial control. I'm still finding that the toughest part of trail O is just deciding whether to protest or not :-)

Orienteering race (Sprint) 25:42 [4] *** 2.5 km (10:17 / km) +60m 9:11 / km
spiked:10/16c

What fun after the trail O to get out on the Sprint course. This was a really fun race and since I was fresh I was able to do well. Spent a lot of course either chasing or being chased by Dagmar Merkova. Generally a clean run. Took a slightly less than optimal route to 7 - I had a little difficulty figuring out exactly which path I was on until I got close enough to identify the road and then corrected to head off in the right direction. Also a little bobble on the way from 16 to the finish. I was trying to cut across the terrain toward the finish, but wasn't reading the map right and ended up just detouring back to the trails and losing time.
