Orienteering 1:38:30 [3]
shoes: Brooks

Day 2!

If I were rating this run on one of those bubble surveys, I would pick the middle one. I didn't do anything extremely disastrous in particular, but I didn't do anything spectacular either.

It probably would have been better if I'd planned more ahead/had a sense for big features to just run to. As it was, I sort of chugged along as close to the line as I could, vaguely keeping track of rocks and swamps and contour features that I passed. On the long leg (control 5) this almost backfired because I lost track of where I was on the map, but then I got really lucky and passed a double boulder feature that was really unique and I recognized it from going to control 2.

In general, I need to be faster, which is interesting as usually my slower runs are a consequence of doing something navigationally unfortunate. Training this semester has hit a low that probably hasn't been lower since middle school, but I don't think that'll be able to change significantly until December. Can't wait!! Over the holidays and into next semester and beyond I'll get back into it, just have to get through the next couple of months.

Time is thereabout. Day 1! Excellent to be orienteering again, though sort of a disaster going to the first control...yikes! It took 24 minutes. I'm not sure how much time it should have taken, but likely not in the ballpark :). Probably 15+ minutes' loss here.

I sort of wandered away off the line to the north and then had to relocate in a bunch of rocks, marshes, and ridges that all looked remarkably identical. Finally found a sufficiently enormous swamp, narrowed it down to two possibilities, and started matching features on the way back to figure out which one it was.

...anyway, the rest of the race I was pretty cautious to avoid losing map contact again :). No more disasters; a couple of bobbles here and there but mostly just slow. Pretty technical course, and it reminded me of Sweden except with a lot fewer people running around in random directions.

note to self: next time pack more than one pair of shoes :).

Run 30:17 [3]

Out to the woods at Carolina North again. Beautiful day. Rain in the morning, but by afternoon it was clear again and the pavement still smelled like rain. Seven deer in the meadow again; maybe they are there every evening. The creek was high again but I didn't try to get around it on the rocks...just ran right through the middle of it. It felt excellent. I can't wait to go orienteering this weekend.

I fell asleep more than once doing reading for school tonight, but I liked this line: "Often, they become so deeply involved in the activity that they almost forget about themselves. Perhaps as a result, after a flow experience, they often find that much more time has passed than they would have imagined." --Tim Kasser

...sounds like orienteering to me :).

See you guys tomorrow!

Another bad week for training & sleeping. djdskjs

...but I think the virus problem may be solved (knock on wood)! So far running the computers on google public DNS instead is working. I had mine reimaged, but my roommate didn't and so far it is also holding up. We'll see!

Will probably bring the bike in tomorrow to get it lined up to be fixed, because there's too much twisting on the pedal and the duct tape isn't going to hold.
