Map run 32:09 [3] 3.8 mi (8:28 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Green

Greenwood run. I ran with the green map from Interscholastics this year in Texas. Green, hilly, a few trails.

...kept looking up so as not to step on the dead squirrel again. I guess this was good practice staying aware of surroundings, even though the squirrel wasn't there anymore.

Day 2. Much better run than yesterday!

I felt a lot more focused & under control. I concentrated on having a plan and checking off features (and I even talked to myself from 4-5 & told myself which features I was passing!).

I also looked for handrails to simplify legs, which I think helped a lot. I sometimes tend to start running straight on the line without considering longer but safer routes, so it was good to take some trails today and get in some stretches of fast running.

I saw Nick (?) from West Point about halfway through the run, and then I kept seeing him throughout it (we ended up sprinting the finish at the same time!). It was weird because we'd often leave the control in slightly different ways, so I wouldn't see him for the middle of the leg...and then I'd see him again in the control circle! It was actually great motivation to run faster & it added some pressure, which was nice.

I did have a few bobbled controls, but everything was fairly minor & correctable.

There was a really beautiful area between 3 and 4, where the course crossed a stream. The ground was covered in leaves and there was a wide flat open space around the place where two branches of the stream met.

Running red this weekend was really fun. It was great to be able to compare routes with more friends than usual since the green course is often split between men and women.

...and now I miss orienteering again ;-)

Orienteering 1:26:15 [4] **** 6.6 km (13:04 / km) +360m 10:16 / km

Day one of the NEOC A-meet. I had a fairly mediocre run....

I had trouble getting into the map at the beginning. On the first control, I had a ton of hesitation and had to stop and re-establish contact with the map. Controls 2 and 3 I actually found quite quickly, but I nearly didn't check both of them because I was slightly off to the side and didn't think they were mine. The run just felt rough and controls felt lucky.

I did fairly well on the longer legs more towards the middle of the run. But I lost time on some short legs that should have been simpler. Control 12 was my worst mistake of the run, and the only timeloss that wasn't primarily because of hesitation. I ended up on a somewhat parallel spur north of the feature that I was trying to find, and it took me awhile to relocate.

The legs got longer as the course went on, so as I started to orienteer better, I also started to get physically more tired.

I guess things just felt off & I made some significant mistakes, but the greatest one was probably 6 minutes--it used to take me longer to relocate.

The terrain was *very* hilly, with loose rocks hidden under leaves on the slopes that made contouring a bit tricky. There was a really beautiful view of the whole valley on one of the legs that almost made me stop for a moment :).

It was wonderful to see everyone again! I miss you guys :).

Aikido 1:45:00 [2]

We learned back rolls from standing (this was fun discounting the first time I tried it and almost crashed into the wall), a couple more release motions, practiced the full walk, and practiced dodging.

Map run 32:24 [3] 3.8 mi (8:32 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Green

Greenwood run. I almost stepped on a very recently killed squirrel because I was too focused on reading the map. I guess this is good training for not running into trees, etc.

Ran with the Cascades map from Australia. It's the most difficult map I've ever run on. There are boulders everywhere, and the contours are somewhat subtle in places. The key I think is to navigate off of the large bare rock slabs.
