Once again, not a particularly good run. Lack of training was evident today as I pretty much ran out of gas towards the end. After the foot injury put me off training I decided to do the Classic rather than the UltraLong course. So it seems that was a good call.
Mike set a great course. Tons of route choice and a good test of navigation. Unfortunately, tons of honeysuckle and fallen trees. A few patches of really thick briars.
Yesterday, a couple or three minutes would have moved me way up the results list. Today I'd have needed 6 or 7 minutes.
Like yesterday, I had some trouble reading the map for the first 3 controls. Trouble focusing (visually). I think I will try warming up tomorrow with a map in hand.
There were two legs that I gave up tons of time. Both were long, one was super long.
Benjamin did great today: White, 2.4k, 12c. Ran 16:47 to take first by a pretty good margin.
Yesterday, he ran White, 2.1k 11c in 18:24 to take third. One mistake, running the wrong way out of a control on a leg that should have been < a minute took 3:20ish and cost himm the win.
A fun course with a good bit of route choice. I had an 'ok' run but not great. Only had 3 hours of sleep last night and then drove all day. Took 4 or 5 controls to get my head into the map, But even then, only had 1 or 2 really good legs. A couple of small mistakes, but nothing major. Just slow.
I found a ruined fence about 150m from the go control. Found it the hard way and did a major face plant at a full run. Several factors prevented serious damage: 1) the fence was woven-wire. Barbed wire would have been bad news. 2). The fence had a lot of give. 3). The ground was soft. 4) I missed the tree.
I'm a bit surprised the fence wasn't taped since it was on the red line.
Thinking about getting a Garmin like Emily's. The Timex GPS unit is just too unreliable. It seemed to be working at the call-up line but 3 steps after punching start, it decided to quit. Tried to restart it but it never did reacquire the gps signal.
