Orienteering race (bush) 1:17:34 [4] *** 9.23 km (8:24 / km)
spiked:11/15c shoes: Mudclaw 333

H2 at Yetar Springs, my first bush event for the year after missing out the week before with the flu. Was too low in the creek at #3, went uphill to look for it, thought i was going too far so went down again, still couldn't find it so went back up. That's when Rachel, who had started 3 minutes behind me, arrived at the creek (at about the same place where I originally came in). We both thought the control was a bit too far up the creek, but the difference between Rachel and me was that she ran straight up the creek until she found the control, whereas I stood around scratching my head and went back and forth in a small area. Nearly three minutes lost there.

Rachel then took the track option to #4, while I bashed my way through the bush, but we arrived at almost the same time. Saw Rachel again at #5, #6 and #8, but I hardly saw her in between controls. That was fun. Most of the time I had already spotted the control before I even noticed she was also there, so I don't think we helped each other much. She took a wide left option to #9 which I wasn't expecting and it confused me. Don't know why I suddenly took notice of where she was going, because not paying attention to that had worked fine up to there, but I did and got confused and lost another three minutes. All right from there but a bit slow and careful on #11 and #12.

I had fun, but I need to move a bit faster to beat the likes of Boltboi, fletch and Rachel. I think I should start treating bush event a bit more like a race instead of just a fun jog through the bush.

Event: UWA

2 AM

Orienteering race (NavDash) 18:56 [5] 4.35 km (4:21 / km)
shoes: Brooks Beast 12

NavDash at UWA. It was a small miracle I made it there; thankfully found a small window of opportunity to get out. Raced to UWA, ran to the rego desk, ran to the start, did a 2 minute warmup because I had to wait anyway, ran the course, ran back to the car and raced off again. That approach never works well for me. With my mind too preoccupied my concentration at the start was poor. Exited #2 in the wrong direction and also had trouble locating the controls at #1, #3, #4 and #5. Fine from there apart from small wobbles to #14 and #18. Third behind fenry and Fletch.
