Running 20:00 [3] 2.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Warm up from the hotel. A walk warm down back with Clare - legs were stiff.

Running 31:43 [5] 10.0 km (3:10 / km) +13m 3:09 / km

Summerfast 10k Stanley Park. About half way through the holiday Donald slipped it into the conversation that he had found a 10k to do on the Saturday before we flew home. Full of enthusiasm we entered but we were doubting the wisdom of our decision after a 6.00am wake up call on the last day of our holiday.

Luckily the race went well for both of us. I finally managed to get under 32 minutes (31.43) and Clare was just outside her pb.

The course was great - straight around the seawall - and flat. Competition was tough too. I decided not to look at my watch but to just race it. It was certainly tough for the first half (we apparently went through 3 k in sub 9 minutes and 5k in 15.17). Around kilos 6 & 7 I managed to get a small lead which I kept to the end. It was a classic finish with tape and everything which was cool - and so was the $100 prize money. Good stuff.

Note
(rest day)

Much needed rest day after the barebones competition - fantastic set of races in Whistler and Vancouver. Will write more later.

Note

Just a note to say how much fun the Barebone and North American champs were. They were all extremely well organised with great maps and courses. The events were put on with a pretty skeleton crew but there were loads of nice touches that we miss at so many events in the UK. Drinks out on the courses every day and at the finish (with a selection of fruit and sports drink) Prizes every day (presented efficiently) together with good PA.

Really impressed and keen to go back again!
10 AM

Orienteering race 29:32 [5] 4.4 mi (6:43 / mi)

Run around BC Campus. Legs were really tired but remained focussed throughout. Again got thrashed by patrick.

Running warm up/down 20:00 [1] 2.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Warm down around BC campus. This time we saw a Blue Whale skeleton.

Running 1:36:00 [2] 5.0 mi (19:12 / mi)

Stopped off for a run up the Chief on the way down to Vancouver with Mike, Patrick and two Norwegians. Patrick and I got a bit ahead on the way up and took a wrong path. We ended up climbing and scrambling up to the top. Did a tiny spot of orienteering on Magnus' sprint map. Amazing views and great map.
1 PM

Running warm up/down 20:00 [1] 2.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Warm up and down. On warm down we went to see the whales at the aquarium and then to Totem pole park (in Stanley Park).

Orienteering race 42:04 [5] 6.66 mi (6:19 / mi)

Long sprint race at Stanley Park. Managed a clean race and just pipped Patrick by 5 seconds. Really good fun race; made you think the whole was round.

Running 1:29:00 [3] 8.8 mi (10:07 / mi)

Unfortunately the middle / sprint race at the top of Whistler had to be cancelled because of too much snow. The organising team put on a relay race but Clare and I opted for a lie in. In the late morning I ran up and down Blackcomb. Didn't get to the top but I did touch some snow......and I saw a bear cub. I was wondering whether to tell Clare or not (she was desperate to see one) but I couldn't resist. Luckily we both saw a bear from the gondola on the way down the hill from Whistler mountain (where we had a BBQ).
