Orienteering 1:27:00 [5] 7.0 mi (12:26 / mi)

6th leg of Jukola. Bittersweet. It was a fun tough course but I struggled the whole way round with my running and orienteering - it felt like I was running with the handbrake on and I couldn't push myself on. Consequently I never really got into a flow. I lost myself a couple of times on longer routes but managed to pick myself up quite quickly. No massive mistakes per se but I was a long way off being pleased.

I was certainly expecting to go out in a competitive position but was not expecting it to be so lonely. Did not see a single person on my course except for Spongey who crossed me on the way back from a loop I was heading in to.

This is what makes orienteering such a great sport - I am desperate to go back to the forest and conquer the course. Next year - but obviously a different forest!

Nervous. Tension was ratcheted up further by the fact that Ralph's splits weren't coming up on the computer at the changeover. I was hoping he hadn't crocked himself.

Trains with a few of the lads on a second model area. Thicker and bushier than the other area. Orienteering was smoother and hit practically everything spot on.

Slow and steady run around Jukola model. No misses as such but orienteering felt slow and clumsy and struggled to get any kind of flow. Really enjoyed it though.

Night o session with a few of us. Probably one of the funnest things I have done this year. Spiking controls at night in Finland is awesome. Had a few big ish misses but kept control and didn't panic.

Phew - accommodation that I had booked for Jukola was ok and they were expecting us (over 50 emails between me us finalising details). Didn't manage to run during the day but went for a 20 minute leg stretcher with Tim and OJ followed by a quick dip in the lake - say oh ah Scandanavia.

Warm up, warm down and park race at High Hazel. Fun course put on
by Rachel and Alex (thanks). The race had a high asbo factor - lots of abuse from local kids (a couple of who chased after me!).

Run to work. In a bit of daze this morning. Went with an invoice in hand to drop off at Andy and Lou's. Realised by the time I got to Commonside that I still had envelope in hand and turned back. Luckily Andy was driving down the hill when I turned into their road so avoided have to tackle the climb.

Was then rudely awakened from my daze again by Candyman who snuck up on me and gave me a bit of a fright.
