Note

Gran Canaria was a top place to go to training. Good and consistent weather (except for the down pours in the night) and the mountain views were fantastic. Well worth the trip

It was good to catch up with Allan and he certainly has some great plans for Active Canaria. You can keep up to date with his blog here: http://activecanaria.com.

7 AM

Running 1:06:55 [1] 8.54 mi (7:50 / mi) +435m 6:46 / mi
ahr:119 max:149

Easy run from the hotel in Las Palmas. Ran 4 miles by myself and then with Clare for the rest. Ran past a couple of clubs which were still in full swing and felt very old and boring. But if running at 7.00am in the morning on the last day of your holiday isn't rock n roll don't know what is. Finished with a quick dip in the sea.

Running 42:22 [2] 5.16 mi (8:13 / mi)

Run with Allan first thing from the hotel. The clock / temp guide showed 20 degrees - I was in shorts and top and Allan was running in a thermal. Ran along the beach front and then to a hill overlooking the town - very nice.
11 AM

Running 1:40:00 [2] 13.6 mi (7:21 / mi)

Another longish run around Casas de Tamadamas - stuck to good trails and roads for this one. Tired by end. A bit hazy so the views were a bit limited. The forest was amazing - but really steep. Clare went orienteering and said it was tough.

Running 1:54:52 intensity: (3:34 @1) + (50:39 @2) + (54:32 @3) + (4:01 @4) + (2:06 @5) 13.3 mi (8:38 / mi)
ahr:130 max:182

Long run over Pico de las Nieves (highest point of the island). Another gorgeous (but hot) day on the trails. Pushed it up some of the hills to make it a solid effort.

Running drills 10:00 [2] 0.5 mi (20:00 / mi)

Drills at the track

Running 38:00 [2] 4.6 mi (8:16 / mi)

Run to gym and back from apartment.

S+C 45:00 [1]

Session at the gym in Maspalomas. Cost me two euros which was an absolute bargain.
4 PM

Running 1:04:00 intensity: (49:00 @3) + (15:00 @4) 8.0 mi (8:00 / mi)

Running at Cruz de Tejenda. Our first trip up to the mountains and they were simply breathtaking. This run started with a steep ascent and I felt a bit short of breath. Not sure if I can claim the altitude (1500m) or simply the size of the hill itself. The run was basically up the hill, and then down the other side and back again. Did about 15 minutes of efforts up the hill.

Running 35:00 [1] 5.2 mi (6:44 / mi)

Run in the evening. Sneaked on to a golf course at dusk. Was very proud of myself until I realised I had been locked in and had to scale a massive fence to get out.
10 AM

Running 1:36:02 intensity: (3:49 @0) + (1:17:55 @1) + (13:03 @2) + (39 @3) + (11 @4) + (25 @5) 12.01 mi (8:00 / mi)
ahr:128 max:171

Run from Maspolomas into the hills. There was still evidence of the flooding and had to cross a river about 4 times on the way up (and back down again). Did 5 x 100m strides at the end.

Running 1:36:00 intensity: (30:00 @2) + (44:00 @3) + (22:00 @4) 15.1 mi (6:21 / mi)

Marathon specific session. The aim was 5 miles 6.30 pace, 5 miles 6.00 and then 5 miles at half marathon pace. Didn't quite work like this in practice. It was sweltering and I was struggling to run at 6.00 miling so decided to bring the half marathon bit forward. Managed 4 miles but was on my knees so took it steady for the remainder of the run.

Monday Feb 1, 2010 #

Running 1:10:00 [3] 8.9 mi (7:52 / mi)

Steady run in the morning including an exploration of the famous sand dunes at Maspolomas (a nature reserve and also a gay cruising zone). Saw 4 naked men and tried not to make any eye contact. Dune were fantastic and couldn't help but doing a few efforts up and down.
6 PM

Running 36:00 intensity: (25:00 @2) + (11:00 @4) 5.1 mi (7:04 / mi)

Run to the track to meet Clare. Ran through a park with a 1k circuit so decided to do 3 laps at tempo pace to warm the legs up.

Running drills 45:00 [2] 0.5 mi (1:29:58 / mi)

Drills with Clare. Not the same as a CC session but good fun none the less. Had to improvise for the ladders and hurdles. Clare was happy to critique my style.
