(rest day)

Long road (and 24 hour flight) to recovery

It is nearly 3 weeks since my ablation procedure. In myself I am in pretty fine fettle; healing and recovering well. My positive disposition is probably helped by the fact that I got to run on the Shropshire Hills yesterday – it feels like a long time since I have properly hit the trails.

The only slight issue in respect of my recovery is in respect of my blood viscosity. Post procedure I am at heightened risk of a blood clot so I am on blood thinning medication and need to give myself twice daily injections until my INR levels remain steady between 2 and 3. Currently I have a personal best level of 1.4 – this is despite doubling my dosage of Warfarin in the past week. The problem with the injections is that you need to inject into the fat of your stomach and I am running out of places to jab!

Aside from my twice daily stabbings, the only other physical evidence of my procedure is through my daily resting HR and HR variability readings (through Ithlete). My resting HR is about 20 beats higher than normal my HRV readings have gone off a cliff. Interesting stuff (to me at least) and I am in the process of comparing readings at different points during the last 3 years.

Whilst I have been given the green light to get back into training, I have decided to take it steady in my build up. I won’t be doing any hard efforts until I get to Melbourne (flights are booked and we touch down on 10 June – gulp). I have now done 4 runs and I have felt good on all of them. My heart rate is a bit inconsistent and I have been running very much “on feel.” The consultant has warned me that it will take time for heart to settle down as it effectively has to “re-tune” itself.

Whilst my running experiences have been good, there is still a spectre of doubt and concern looming every time I lace up my Inov8s. At the moment I can be positive because my problems have been sorted until the point in time that I get another fibrillation. The more I run the more opportunities there are for me to find out that the procedure was not successful. Not quite a quantum physics problem but it reminds me of Schrodinger’s cat analogy. ..

Life is now all about packing and sorting stuff for the big move. I start at the University of Melbourne (as an HR Manager for the School of Landscape and Environment) on 16th June so I will have a week to sort ourselves out. Time seems to be racing away and one of the biggest conundrums is how many pairs of shoes I can justify shipping over……
