A really excellent course planned by Mark and Mary Frank. Technically challenging with almost no trail running. Required good compass running and reading subtle terrain detail for attackpoints. 11 was the only debatable control as in a pit after a long compass run and attackpoints really another pit, a bit bingo. Orienteered cleanly and was happy with my ability to run on a bearing which is something I normally have an issue. Biggest issue, being distance estimation as was coming up short consistently. A lack of practice hasn't helped. Also not planning ahead enough. Lost some time on the short leg 9-10. Should have stayed on path longer - I was expecting the control much sooner, the distance issue. 10-11 the long leg - planned to use control 7 as the preliminary attackpoints, ended further up the hill at a boulder control that wasn't mine, from there found the pit attackpoints, but not the control pit, had to backtrack to attackpoints pit and go very slowly to control pit. Frustrating as had been happy with navigation until then.
Still overall a really enjoyable event and a lovely day to be out orienteering. Carol and Ellie came along and had a good walk.
Stopped by an amazing model train open house in Downington on the way home. Layout around 900 sf and in places 4 levels of track. Probably the most impressive layout I have ever seen.
