Elk Neck S.P.

Orienteering race 43:00 [3] *** 5.6 km (7:41 / km)
spiked:2/3c shoes: Hoka RN1

Run down to beach and get map, run back to pavillion and get punch card. pick up 3 flags on the way to the boat
8 AM

paddle race 1:18:00 [3] *** 9.1 km (7.0 kph)
spiked:0/0c

easy pace paddle around Turkey Point
saw 3 bald eagles and a GBH. no boats even came close and the water was dead calm. stayed even with GOALS 1, but gave up a place to GOALS 2.
9 AM

bike race (mtb29) 1:29:00 [3] *** 12.7 km (8.6 kph)
spiked:7/7c shoes: Pearl Izumi MTBO

bike O section w/ roads off limits

bike race (mtb29) 28:00 [3] * 9.0 km (19.3 kph)
spiked:1/1c shoes: Pearl Izumi MTBO

short trail section and then road ride to first O section
10 AM

Orienteering race 49:00 [3] *** 4.7 km (10:26 / km)
spiked:2/3c shoes: Salomon soft ones

out and back to 3 flags. unmarked trail brought you near the furthest one but I did not trust it and overshot the spur. subtle 10 ft contours. left this section in first with both GOALS teams close behind.
11 AM

bike race (mtb29) 30:00 [3] 7.6 km (15.2 kph)
shoes: Pearl Izumi MTBO

short road ride, but I got kicked in the leg by a charlie horse. quad locked up so I walked a bit and stretched. during the stretching my hammy locked up - same leg. unsure what to do with it so I just kept walking. worked it out and jumped back on the bike and slowly pedaled toward the big O section.
12 PM

Orienteering race 2:50:00 [3] *** 13.7 km (12:25 / km)
spiked:8/9c shoes: Salomon soft ones

USGS map w/ plotted points. clockwise because I don't like anti-clockwise.
nailed the first 5. first 3 were in the woods, the next two along trails. had a choice to back track on a forest road or go straight. I noticed some unmapped trail that went more direct so I took it. made a few turns but I could tell it was still going my way - until it didn't. bushwhacked and hit another trail and continued on it, but neglected to check my compass and passed the road junction I was aiming at. instead of staying on the main road and adding a bit of distance I made the decision to go straight. what could have been a 3 minute detour became a 10 minute slog. reached the road again and then blew the attack on the flag in the reentrant. bailed to the road and reattacked. I was close earlier and my instinct to continue down the valley was right, but I had no time to waste in there. the next two were ok, but the last cp across the road was hung a bit high so I did a small loop around and finally found it with some help.
3 PM

bike race (mtb29) 1:12:00 [4] *** 19.3 km (16.1 kph)
spiked:1/1c shoes: Pearl Izumi MTBO

quick TA and a ride to the finish, snagged cp 14 again as a penalty loop.
first overall thanks to Neely pulling his team back and not giving chase.
