easy hike with kent and melissa in harriman on trails I am not familiar with. sightings today included the usual deer, turkey and toads, but also 2 rattlesnakes. the first one (near km 10.15 on Panther mt.) scared me out of my shoes. it was about 4 feet away on the opposite side of a rock from me. the rattle was very impresive. I have never seen a snake that close. the second one (near km 13.08) was discovered while joking and poking around under a rock - completely accidental.
our route took us past a furnace, Monitor rock, the "Egg", the "poached egg", a mysterious pipeline along Pine Meadow Lake and Conklin's cemetery. The Eggs were quite a disappointment, but the other sites had us speculating their history. Bernie has a great book on Harriman which I need to get a copy of. Interesting thought: I think he lives about 3 miles away as the crow flies.
