Orienteering race 1:35:46 [5] 7.2 km (13:18 / km) +220m 11:32 / km
slept:5.0 shoes: Inov 8

Went into this race wondering how far I would get before I collapsed, due to the altitude, distance or climb. But I hung in there and held it together physically. This was the most technical of the three days and managed to get through it with only a 2 minute error. Early on had some legs I was quite proud of. So this meant I was reading the map well. Took 2nd to Ken again, and beat Ole by 1 minute. But also collected some scalps of younger studs I rarely beat at this long distance like Bruce Wolfe, Kent Ohlund and Werner Haag. Left feeling quite elated and ready for more O this fall. Oh BTW. Western States Champ for the first time in many years.

Middle Course at Little Truckee Summit. Start was odd. Running past waiting competitors and across the road dodging the dusty shuttle. Course setter's need more schooling on how to set up a start. Bags were all faded. This contributed to my big mistake as I ran past the control 2 by about 10 meters and it took me 2-3 minutes to adjust back. Huffing and puffing up the hill on the way back up. Altitude still is an issue. Still only 2 minutes behind walk and 1 minute behind his brother Ken in M60. But what could have been.......

A-meet Sprint at Northstar. Made a 2 minutes error on 5. Besides that everything went smoothly. But that was enough to take me out of the running for a win. Altitude caught up to me and I was hardly running the last part of the course. Hopefully i am noe acclimatized. Lost to Greg Walker Sr by about 2 1/2 minutes.

Running 45:00 [3] 3.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
slept:8.0 weight:153lbs shoes: adidas

Today was the day for some terrain running. Up at Tilden, I jogged for 20 minutes and then did 6x200 across a rutted field. This gave me a chance to get some practice with my active ankles at race pace. 20 minutes jog was excrucuatingly hard. Lungs wheezing, legs wobbly. But the 200m intervals went better. By the time I ran two I was feeling stronger and the lungs were clearing.
