OK event at Riverfront Park. I did the instructions for first timers, then literally ran to the bathroom, back to the car to change, then back to the start. Made it with 2 minutes to spare before the mass start. This was not how I wanted to mentally or physically prepare today.
The maps had been handed out in advance, so I took a glance at the route to the first control before the start. I did a good job of going out fast-ish and not too fast. It helped to remember that a 7 km course (even on flat ground) was a long race for me.
I was surprised at how well I felt mentally and physically. I did really well today! Another bonus was this was the first time I orienteered on this map with real controls: they show up from a long way away :) Two minor errors: picking the hard way across the power lines on the way back; and stopping one road too soon on the way to 21.
I glanced at my watch near the end and realized I had a chance to be under 10 min/k so I pushed pretty hard. Just made it!
Good turnout, even with a fair number of no-shows. Lots of fun to see some of my "O for Women" participants again.
