Met with Rachel and talked through various tasks I've asked her to take on, including getting uniform receipts from juniors we still don't have them from so we can submit the check requests all at the same time; helping pull together documentation of the Europe trip and the past year; helping with information for the upcoming season. Showed her how to edit the google site.

I want to get vaccinated in Canada this fall for that tick-borne encephalitis that exists in Eastern Europe and for which a vaccine is not available in the USA. You're supposed to get two shots 2-4 weeks apart, and then another a year later. So I'm thinking we could do it when we go to Ottawa and then Ontario this fall. I need to figure out how to find a doctor and all that.

Sent MaryJane the local newspaper article about Isabel. MaryJane is collecting publicity that came out around JWOC for a report to JTESC.
Created a poll for all juniors who may attend upcoming big meets, so that we can arrange local transportation, shared housing, and activities. Please feel free to send juniors and parents at this poll.
Posted Erin's latest message to the Standing Team.
Sent instructions to Rachel for how to edit the google site so she can work on collecting material about JWOC similar to last year.
Various other emails.

Notes from Barb/Erin/Guy call

Training camp weekends: Erin sent us a draft letter to clubs asking them to put on training camps this fall. We talked it through so we understood what Erin wants to accomplish and can help revise the letter and send it out. The goal is to build over the next few seasons so that clubs soon are putting on 2-3 full scale trainings, with Juniors helping out. This would segue into having a continuously running junior program.

JTESC: Guy will talk with JTESC members about whether they want to continue and what they want to accomplish, in advance of the JTESC call Aug 26th. In addition to JTESC, it would be great to staff up various committees and projects (JDT, Safety, ...)

Rules change to combine ages 17-20 and change the courses: There has been discussion in the committee and Erin spoke to Clare about this at the time of the AGM this summer. It is currently tied up in the Rules Committee. We hope that it can get out to the Board at the October meeting to give us enough time to adjust and implement it starting in 2014.

JWOC selection: We need to announce JWOC selection race at least 4 months in advance. Guy is tasked with writing up any final specific rules about the race, perhaps drawing from senior team trials. Erin is tasked with writing up the process of reviewing petitions. Erin is working on figuring out the location and date of the Selection Races, and how they will be put on.

Anna will move in with us in September; Suzanne is already here; we'll have three really strong women orienteers under our roof, hopefully training together!

Note

Nope. Did get to bed by 10, but didn't exercise much, and had a Coke and chips from the awesome burrito place. Forgot to bring lunch to work. On a positive note, ate the last amazing pear from Connor and Lisa. They were SOOOOO good!

Note

Had a couple of good conversations this evening.

Ethan and Carl Childs:
* Ethan said the summer went well. It was good to have a few adults; there was always someone people could go to. The number of people was good. Having the alternates and Tour juniors close to the team during JWOC was pretty cool; the logistics were convenient for that this year.
* Like the idea that Erin has been putting out of having the junior trip next year focus on North America. That could include more and younger kids.
* Ethan says he doesn't question the coaching approach of hsi dad or of Erin. He liked the training weeks; he felt the two weeks prepared him well for JWOC. He hadn't gotten into the maps yet after one week.
* Ethan's biggest problem for training is that there aren't many good maps close to him.
* We talked about the events he may be able to make this fall, including the Pawtuckaway camping weekend, the Ottawa fest, the Boulder Dash, the Canadian champs, the Harriman meet.
* Ethan and Nate split up the other boys on the JST and called them in the spring to check in about training. Sometimes it was brief. We talked about what else the juniors might talk about.
* Coming up with a project for juniors to do together in order to build community isn't really needed just for the juniors who went to Europe (they have seriously bonded) but could be useful if other juniors are included.
* Carl thanked me & Erin for the work we've been doing.
* Carl suggested ways to make the organization simpler in the future.

Phone call with Erin:
* Harriman meet: Erin called Daniel and talked through answers to the questions that the Harriman camp guy had
* Erin will join my call with Lisa about supporting juniors at A meets. Erin would like to hash out who we can tap to do the organization at each meet. Also figure out which kids will be at which meets, and delegate some things to the captains and other senior juniors. Transportation will be key for some kids. It would be good to make it possible for the juniors to stay together - get several hotel rooms for them to share or campground sites.
* Help Frida find host families to stay with as she tours the USA and helps out with junior development
* Erin will ask the juniors to start writing, provide photos, etc - about Europe but also their lives over the next year. Bring photographic equipment to meets, etc. Digital ONA for juniors.
* We'll probably put out a call for JST applications in October, deadline beginning of December; roll out the new JST January 1st. Tell juniors very soon what the guidelines/criteria are, what to do to get onto the JST.
* Erin was contacted by a teacher in MA; wants him to do training; he may be able to pass that on to NEOC or CSU
* Barb do quarterly report
* Erin is going to work on training camp planning and send something to me & Guy about it. We talked more about training camps. Local juniors can help out.
* Erin wrote an excellent piece about how coaches can get to know their athletes; will try and get it into ONA
* JTESC composition up for renewal; talked about that and want to talk to Guy more about it.
* Meet with Guy on Wednesday.

Note

Nope. Coke, stayed up too late, not enough exercise.

Finalized the JWOC accounting and sent it to JTESC, Tim, Glen, Peter for review. This stuff takes a long time to do! Still, feeling pretty good about it. There might be one expense not yet submitted: pre-JWOC grocery expenditures by Marianne. Otherwise I think we're caught up.

Anyone interested in a summary of the finances can review it here.

Good news: we've raised our target amount for the year, and if we raise additional money we can repay the families for the part of JWOC training and competition that we didn't have in the budget. In previous years we were able to cover that entirely, but this year we had more juniors traveling, and we trained for 2 weeks instead of 1, so we're still about $10,000 short.

I'm hoping that some families will opt to donate their reimbursement toward the junior fund, and I propose to use that partly for grants for local clubs to start junior programs, and partly for travel to training camps and A meets.

Some of my next tasks:
* post-JWOC accounting
* JDT
* Harriman meet
* Planning for junior activities at fall A meets
* uniform reimbursements

Note

New system for assessing my training: Each day gets evaluated as "Yes", "Nope", or "Meh", based on soft criteria that are changeble, subjective, and not (yet) published.

Goal? I guess, be in good enough shape to do what I consider to be a decent job at Team Trials next spring.

Today: "Yes"
