Note

Hello my friends. Love you all.

My little toe and nearby foot parts are still complaining a bit from when I took that fall on the stairs a couple months ago. Kinda annoying...

Ethan is in his 2nd week of running this year's Mayor's program - we have six kids, and he's having them create neighborhood O courses. Tomorrow Keegan and Ethan will replicate the Morse school virtual orienteering field trip and honestly I suspect that the 5th graders might have been as good as these high schoolers will be. I think they were more motivated.

Dave and I are purchasing a house on the Cape which is partly to motivate me to be more effective at retiring. I haven't been at all effective. It's true I'm only working one day a week for the biotech company now, instead of 4, but with Navigation Games, Henry Street Farms, biotech work, OUSA youth map project, and this or that other thing, well, there is a lot going on. This year's summer internship program was scaled back because of the pandemic, and they only took kids from low-income households (based on free & reduced lunch status). I thought it was important to be a worksite because it provides more income to those families, even though we have to do a lot of it online. So I offered up Henry Street Farms as a second worksite, but that means a lot more work and feelings of regret and inadequacy for me. But also some good times and experiences I would not otherwise have had. It will feel amazing in 4 weeks when WE ARE DONE!

We close on the house in late August. It is on the Nickerson State Park kartapullauten map that I made recently - it's about 500m walk to get into the actual park from the house. I'm hoping to host orienteers to visit and explore. I know people have ragged on NSP for its vegetation but I think there are reasonably good options for running around and training there. Dave, Izzy and I did go up to the National Seashore recently, and the part we saw (with another kp map I made) does have good interesting topography; you have to be willing to deal with lots of bil/bay/bar/blue-berry, at least where we were. So again, could be of interest for visiting elites to do some training, once we all survive this pandemic, no thanks to our incompetent leadership.

Today is Dave's birthday. Because I have a couple meetings tonight, we'll celebrate on Thursday evening.

We had an exchange student lined up for the fall. That's not likely to happen now. Maybe in January. I was really looking forward to having another visitor, this time a girl.

This has been the longest week. On Tuesday I was thinking it was Friday.

Orienteering 45:00 [2]

Hung controls for a compass/distance exercise.
It was great to get out. I was sweating and felt so good the rest of the day
