Classic champs day 2. Two more hours of yesterday. Yippie. Lots more on the thick end of the map, then some crazy downhill through some wet cliffs.

Classic champs day 1 blue. Ok run, a couple good mistakes, but nothing too bad. Terrain was pretty good, too many saplings in the first half of the woods to call it actually nice, but the second half wasn't too bad.

orienteering race 16:30 [4] *** 3.0 km (5:30 / km)

Sprint finals race 1. I missed the part of the website info where "sprint 1 starts from 2-4pm" means that it closes at 3, so I was in a bit of a rush to get started and forgot the garmin. And the warmup. But it was ok. Raining with lots of mud, especially down the first trail from the start.

orienteering race 18:21 intensity: (12 @0) + (12 @1) + (26 @2) + (2:40 @3) + (13:41 @4) + (1:10 @5) *** 3.33 km (5:31 / km) +70m 4:59 / km

Sprint finals race 2. I somehow had enough points to get into the fast finals heat, so we started last after everybody else had loosened up the mud going down the hills. Was getting pretty cold after sitting around in the rain after the first one. Wiped out going down the muddy trail out of the start, and slid down on my butt for a while. Right behind Hannah until 7, then she went on the wrong side of a fence and I got ahead by a couple meters. Blew it going to 12, missed a trail I was looking for and ended up taking a route way out of my way to the east.

orienteering 25:24 intensity: (9 @0) + (4:53 @1) + (12:35 @2) + (7:47 @3) 2.73 km (9:18 / km) +66m 8:18 / km

orienteering 14:52 [0] 0.73 km (20:29 / km)

Driving from Rochester to Saratoga, we stopped in Syracuse for the pre-championship training camp. No, not the classic champs, the important ones. Also a good test of the dangers of such treacherous races, where lost runners quickly return to feral absurdity in their efforts to escape.
4 PM

orienteering 1:01:44 intensity: (13:57 @0) + (14:15 @1) + (19:51 @2) + (9:17 @3) + (4:19 @4) + (5 @5) * 7.39 km (8:21 / km) +24m 8:13 / km
ahr:114 max:171 spiked:12/12c

Saratoga Springs street-o. Because the only thing that sucks more than score-o is score-o where you have to do stupid calculations instead of punching controls (ie. guess the flow rate of a water fountain in liters/min, presumably using the nalgene you always run with in your pocket and a stopwatch). So I skipped all those and just wrote in random answers, which made it a lovely slow jog around the city.

ahr:143 max:164 spiked:12/12c

Sprint at Webster Park in Rochester. Lots of open fields, a few greenish patches, and a wet creek crossing. Felt pretty good running, even without really warming up and after a cheeseburger sub for lunch two hours before. Finished second behind Zack Lyons.
4 PM

orienteering race 51:36 intensity: (41 @0) + (24 @1) + (1:15 @2) + (21:28 @3) + (26:52 @4) + (56 @5) *** 7.69 km (6:43 / km) +59m 6:28 / km
ahr:147 max:169 spiked:29/29c

Score-O afterwards. Didn't really feel like route planning too much, and the point values weren't in too much of an order, so I just went out planning on getting them all, and bailing when I ran out of time. Never ran out of time, and finished first ahead of Charlie by a couple minutes.

Also stepped in a swamp, went in halfway up to my knee, and came back out without the shoe on. Took about a minute of digging up to my elbows to find it and pull the shoe back out. That was fun.

Sprint on Goat Island, in the middle of Niagra Falls (find the control). Not the most interesting for route choice, since it was basically just a run around the path on the outside of the island. But a cool location none the less, so a fun day. Felt pretty good running, could actually try to go fastish today. Then to Rochester for delicious dinner at Rick and Linda's.

GLOF o-cross motala. had two days of food in me, and I was feeling pretty good, so I managed to mostly run the first two maps (but then walked most of the third). lots of steep muddy ravines to go up and down today, but they weren't too much of a problem at the speed I was going. still slipped and fell a lot, and managed to stop the garmin somewhere near the end of the second map, and didn't notice it until I fell again towards the end of the third map and turned it back on.
