Orienteering race (Foot) 1:20:54 [4] 7.8 km (10:22 / km) +200m 9:12 / km

QOC: Gunston Hall, VA. I was running pretty well. I spiked the first several controls. On a longer leg (#6), I thought I'd made a bad choice since it was longer but turned out to be greener/slower than expected. That control seemed to be mis-hung one stream over. Moving on, I went past the start and down to trails. Once across the creek on flatter ground, I headed off on a bearing anticpating seeing a hill ahead. I saw one to my left which made me think I had drifted--it was the wrong hill (a little too early and left) but I never realized it. I'd gotten distracted by others there and must not haved matched the code to #7; I may have jsut checked to see if it were on my course and it was at a later point. After mis-punching there, I went on. Joe Barret came through and I got confused since he and I were going slightly different ways. I went out toward the trail, then back in right away. I ended up between #8 and #9 and foolishly I cut right to #9. I worked my way back to #8, and then #9 again. Going to #10 the green was thicker than expected. Once across it and on flat ground, I was not sure where I'd find the control. I read the terrain and left a woman looking for it too; I hit it quickly. There was more unexpected green going to #11 (where I'd punched before and thought I was at #7). I hit the rest of the controls okay. I got the distinct feeling that I was running faster than I could read the map. The green seemed to make that worse. It was disappointing to end with a mispunch but I got a decent workout. Note that I'd also fumbled on starting my GPS watch.
