Warm-up for DVOA's Baytona 500 Day 1 at Batsto, Wharton State Forest, NJ. Running from the parking area to the start on the marked trail. Peggy reminded me that I had left my e-punch as we were just getting down the trail so I had to go back.

DVOA's Batona 500 Day 1 at Batsto, Wharton State Forest, NJ. I started out okay. Never going that fast because I'm out of shape, I made use of the trails as much as I could. I liked the subtle 2.5m contours but not the high blueberry bushes. I bobbled #6, then messed-up big on #7. #10 was the worst with about an 8 minute error. See the Split List. Altogether, there were about 16 minutes of error so this wasn't that good an outing for me.

US Team Fundraiser Sprint B at Batsto, Wharton State Park, NJ. I almost didn't run this since my I was a bit tired from the earlier run. I started 1 minute behind Michael Warlters. Either he was running faster or I was running slower. I got some contact with him by the 6th control but didn't pass him until the 9th when he made an error unseen to me. Right on my tail most of the way was Patrick Shannon. I had two bad hesitations on the way to #4 which was enough for him to make and keep contact with me. I felt I navigated well under the pressure and may have helped Patrick as I fumbled my way into a few controls. I reached the Go control before Patrick but my stomach muscles were hurting from the earlier race and I'm just not in the shape I used to be. Patrick caught me on the run in. Unfortunately for both of us, he fumbled the punch and we lost two seconds in the back-up; enough to be top 10 if it hadn't happened. I finished 11th overall which was surprising but I'm sure that some of the faster people were holding back.
