Orienteering race 21:01 [4] *** 2.74 km (7:40 / km) +50m 7:02 / km
spiked:9/12c

Sprint round 1, with Nadim, Rex, Mikkel, and Ted. Stayed with them longer than I expected, though I dropped back a bit when we crossed the road into the woods. Hyperextended my knee really badly on the 7th leg, and didn't know at first whether I'd be able to get up off the ground. I've never before experienced that much pain when orienteering, but after 30 seconds or so it subsided to when I was able to jog, then run again. Scary. Finished last out of the group.

Orienteering race 20:37 [4] *** 2.69 km (7:40 / km) +80m 6:40 / km
spiked:12/12c

Sprint round 2. With Erik, Nadim, Vlad, Clint, Brendan, and Rex. Some of us did the first control properly and overtook some of the group from a minute ahead of us. Big crowd from then on. Wisely steered around the dump on both legs that went near it (trail around to right the second time). Wound up fourth of the group (Clint was faster, but mispunched.)

Orienteering race 19:49 [4] *** 2.89 km (6:51 / km) +75m 6:04 / km
spiked:14/16c

Sprint round 3. Nice hectic run with people who had filtered down to my level: Daniel, Brendan, Clint, Brian, Jeff, and Rex. Still a very tough race, and we were in there with people from other groups who we either caught or who caught us. Note that the non-spiked controls on these races are incredibly subtle errors, constituting only a few seconds in most cases. Managed second out of the group, only 16 seconds behind Daniel.

Hanging a couple of flags (#1 and #3 for the Mega) in the fading light. Couldn't find the small streamers, and had to be extra diligent in making sure I was really where I was supposed to be.

Hanging still more controls for The Mega. Part of this was on my mountain bike, riding up a trail and back to drop off a bag of controls so that I could pick them up when I got to that part of the course, but most of it was on foot, plodding along...
