Note

What an awesome event, and a treat to run with the best orienteers in north america!

My goals for the weekend were pretty modest. Minimally, complete all the courses without mis-punching and do better than 15min/km. Better would be to navigate cleanly, and convince myself that 10min/km would be an achievable goal. So I made the minimal goal, and I gave myself lots of opportunity for improvement. Generally, navigation was sloppy on Saturday. While navigation improved on Sunday, fitness and endurance was a limiting factor.

Got a Garmin 305 recently and am loving the feedback it provides, especially when combined with QuickRoute. I love technology...

Blew the first control and lost about 4.5 minutes, then lost another 6 minutes or so on poor map reading. Found the terrain to be technically challenging. Was surprised a few times how the bag seems to be located in a well protected pocket within pretty thick blueberry.

Orienteering race 17:35 intensity: (4:50 @0) + (1 @2) + (18 @3) + (30 @4) + (11:56 @5) 2.1 km (8:22 / km) +42m 7:37 / km

Figuring out reasonable routes on a sprint course always seems so easy after the race, but can be ridiculously challenging during the run. Once I turned over the map, I found myself spending way too much time trying to fold the map, that I was sloppy to 1 and was totally off to 2. Don't know what happened on the way to 8, but it wasn't good. All in all, at least 3 minutes in errors which is a killer in a sprint.

Nevertheless, I thought it was a great course.
