Orienteering race 1:51:14 [4] *** 13.78 km (8:04 / km) +380m 7:06 / km
ahr:156 max:175 spiked:14/17c shoes: Low Top O-spikes

Second day at Umstead. Felt like I was back into orienteering. Made a horrible route choice decision on one of the long legs...back into my habit of choosing the technically harder route to "see if I could" execute it flawlessly...well, we know how that is going to work out, eh? In retrospect, if I had executed perfected, it would have been at the same time as if I had just taken the road around...so it was a classic case of the reward not justifying the downside risk. Noticed that I am back to a "score" of low 80's on this long race vs. my high scores of low 90's on middle distance races. Why can I push myself (mentally really) so much harder on a shorter race...yet I don't see that same thing happening in sprints?

Day 1 at Umstead SP. Rough late night bus ride, but we were able to sleep in a bit. Nice to see familiar faces at the meet (Brendan, Ross, Sam, Eric, etc.) Consciously tried to take the early part of the race easy to get back into racing (also tried to emphasize this to the cadets, with pretty good success). Had some consistent problems coming out of controls on rough compass...5 controls I came out of about 30 degrees off. Another indicator that I really need to do some compass skill training.

Skiing (Downhill) 1:40:00 [1]

Went to the slope after dinner. It was some loose ice on top of solid ice, so the skiing was definitely the choppiest of the season so far. Really had to pay attention to what you were doing, but I felt it in my legs a lot more than usual.

Running tempo 49:21 [3] 6.0 mi (8:14 / mi)
ahr:148 slept:7.5 weight:184lbs shoes: Saucony 3D Grid Hurricane (Blu

Did the "Shortest, Fastest, Safest" presentation with O-Team. Really hard to tell what they took away from it, besides some guy ranting and raving for 1/2 hour. I think the practical exercise (using a master-type map to do a bunch of C-A-R analysis while running with a partner) was the real cincher, but I should have overridden Zach and done a more centralized execution, since I think some people ended up just going back to their rooms or going for a run with nothing more than a map in their hand. I should have shown them what "right" looks like, rather than just instruct them what right looks like.
I ended up matched with Brad H. and we went to Wash. Gate, Lusk Res., Thayer Gate, S. Dock and home at a decent (but not excessive) pace...hard enough to force some difficulty to the route analysis. He's got a pretty mature view of route choice, although he tends to fixate quickly on one choice, rather than consider a viable alternative...good for a race situation, but not ideal for an analysis drill.
