Orienteering race 1:00:47 [4] *** 5.9 km (10:18 / km)
ahr:152 max:166 spiked:12/13c slept:8.0 shoes: Low Top O-spikes

Red Course at NEOC's Diamond Hill in Rhode Island (first time orienteering in Rhode Island...only got to go because the au pair "strawberry picking" was cancelled because of rain/mud). Nevery really felt in contact with the map and the rock features felt bizarrely variable.

Orienteering race 1:27:00 [4] *** 6.5 km (13:23 / km)
ahr:161 max:177 spiked:15/16c slept:8.0 shoes: Low Top O-spikes

Red Course at Beaver Brook (UNO). Very hot and humid. I ran first and watched Anna second. Was doing very well, through all the technical parts of the map. Then, at pt. 14, I noticed that the area was unusually blank, but it didn't register that I was leaving the park going into an area that wasn't field-checked. I messed up the attackpoint leaving the trail, started seeing unmapped boulders and areas of green. Got within 30m of the control, but didn't go over and investigate because it was too green. Went up to a field corner to relocate, but it was the wrong field. Finally back at the trail, noticed the park boundary on the map, re-attacked, using only the contours and went right to it. Heart rate was very high for this race...maybe the heat.
