Orienteering race 13:00:00 [1]

North American Rogaine Champs
Allegany State Park
2300pts (2270 pts per SI - maybe one control didn't register) 2nd or 3rd overall
Perfect weather for the event -cool and sunny. Took us awhile to concoct our route this time trying to determine which controls to drop. We looked at how we had done the last time here and determined we had about a 3k/hour straightline average (4k first day - 2k night and next day). Knowing we were not in the same shape (or age) as last time we thought this speed might not be achieved so we needed some possible shortcuts at the end.
Our plan was to take the west half of the map during the day returning to the hash house and then into the night for the eastern half. We mark our top of the hour times on the map to gauge our progress - this gives us an opportunity to give or take controls as we are behind or ahead of our plan. Great for the mojo when you are ahead of schedule - sucks when your trying to catch up - 90% of the time we are behind near the end of the event. Well this was the anomaly - we were ahead most of the time and could not take extra controls at the end. At one point we were 2-1/2 hrs ahead of schedule! Obviously weather (rather than age) has a huge factor in our pace - last time it was 80F and we were really slogging it.

Running 20:35 [5] 5.0 km (4:07 / km)

Joined the Bundschuhs for a road race in Hollis. Perfect weather - cool after rain. Good fun although not the best training for a rogaine this weekend. Ran with my rogaine shoes (only ones I had along) and promptly put a huge blister on my left foot. Stupid! What was I thinking. This is probably only the start of destroying my feet this weekend.
Felt strong - did not really push it - so probably had a sub 20 if there was no rogaine.

Running 4:25:01 [2]

Long run with Ernst at Bow Lake. Up Parker Mountain and out to Barn Door Gap. Knee was feeling a bit wobbly after 4 hours - no pain just not comfortable. Drizzly all day - lots of water on trails.
Wet all day long.
