Fast Middle at Ironwood. Nav was much better than last year but still had plenty of mistakes. Really fun area and nice to run with Jan for a bunch of it to really push myself on tired legs. Went about as well as I could have hoped in this terrain.

1 - Started slowish as to not make a mistake and take 20 minutes to the first control like last year.
2 - Kinda slow through some of the veg but otherwise good nav
3 - Should have just looked around for a sec. This is a pretty painful mistake
4 - Good bearing and feature reading
5 - Parralel error, saw some other runners so I went over where they were and found it. Wasn't used to how the veg was mapped yet so the green wasn't very noticeable to me.
6 - Zooming to catch up with Jan. Also got pulled of my bearing by him a little tho
7 - My direction was thrown off a little coming out of the gully but I corrected it nicely
8 - I knew I was to far south but I still let a parallel feature throw me off a bit. Plus the green was allot thicker here than in other areas
9 - A bit of a bobble but not to bad
10 - Pretty bad bearing out the start bc I wanted to stay ahead of Jan. Got a cholla as well which slowed me for a sec but it wasn't to deep so easy enough to remove
11 - Was staring to slow down a bit so Jan started to get away from me by running faster along the trail
12 - Following Jan a little bit but also checking my own bearing and features
13 - Little hook but not too bad, passed Jan anyways
F - The wash was very sandy and slow so Jan got away and finished ahead of me.

Cholla Chaser
Terrain was allot like some parts of Catalina but with way more cacti and thorn bushes. Made a few errors, mainly just being too high too low on a reentrant after not seeing the control in all the long grass and bushes. The race mostly went well other than that and I slowly picked off people on the point-to-point part. Eventually passed Francis but then got a Cholla right in the back of my calf and stopped to try and pull it out to no avail so he passed me again and I came in fifth after hobbling to the finish with a cactus in my leg. I Probaly could have made it a 3rd without the cholla but even without mistakes (~4:30) I would have not been able to catch up to Boris and Ali.

Javalina Hustle
Was alone for the most part after making some mistakes, plus there weren't too many people around my speed anyways. Started off in somewhat of a pack and then ran past 2 while trying to decide which control to skip. Luckily Boris was following me so he lost some time too. Sped up to try and catch Jan but took a bad route down a reentrant through some thorns and then thought my control was on the other side of the fence which cost some time crossing back over. Lost another 30s in a tricky area and then really messed up and lost 4 min by going up the wrong spur after thinking I was already at the clearing. From here I was all on my own with a quick glimpse of Boris at some points. The rest of the course went well. I think my routechoice to 14 was good but I'll have to see the livelox. Physically my calfs and feet were sore if the first half but subsided in the second. Knee felt good other than the odd soreness when crossing a gully.

Catalina Classic - SWSW Day 1
Went a lot better than last year, probably due to more familiarity with the terrain plus it was in an easier area. Took it pretty easy bc knee which felt pretty good with some tape. Managed to not run into any cacti, just lots of thorny bushes.
1 - Solid start
2 - Turns out the large green circle was a major saguaro instead of the small thicket I was looking for but bearing was good so I got to it anyways, just a little confused.
3 - Good, but should have gone right of the line through the wash
4 - good
5 - Tricky leg but didn't make any big mistakes
6 - Tried to stay closer to the line but ended up getting pushed way off by some veg. Should have just stuck to the wash and taken the trail at the end.
7 - Good
8 - I could see a hill behind the control as soon as I climbed out of the wash so mostly just picked my way through the mesquite as efficiently as I could.
9 - Same sorta thing. Easy target way off in the distance.
10 - Good job picking up on all the washes.
11 - Kinda slow through some rocks and veg
12 - Mostly on trail
13 - Running along the wash would have been faster but this isn't a race or anything so took the less boring route. Although it was more of running to a hill in the distance anyways.
14-F - Good, mostly just trails
