fat otter fall sprint - stompknockers w/ Robby

red woods gate, next to palos hills, IL

Cold, but not too bad. We made it to the pre-race meeting w/ 1 minute to spare. All situated and planned, we started the first phase: 1 to bike up the hill, leave the bike on top, then run down, while the other was running up the hill and biking down. So I biked up and totally used all my breath to run down the hill...so we actually had to stop for 10 min to catch my breath and left almost last. we didn't make it in the first 15 teams, so we went on the MTB section, which was super fun, it rained only toward the end, so the trail was still pretty good by the time we were done. Again: very cool MTB! We were moving at a pretty good clip at this time.

Next to paddling double kayaks, which went pretty good while Robby was steering, then we switched places (in the water!) and my steering was not that great, but with a couple detours and his awesome patience we made it back quite all right.

Biked back to the main TA and started the O section. By now I knew we were not doing too bad, and not sure what competitive juices came over me but I grabbed the map and started navigating w/ out considering much if he wanted to navigate. half way I was finally able to let go of the map and handed it over, and my mistake was to take a caffeinated gel at this time (while his knee hurting so could not run). This was one of the toughest patience exercises for me, cause i was so ready to pick up the pace and we could not... but we were moving quite OK, and we kept catching up w/ a very fast team (but unexperieced navigators ;) and kind enough to share some food w/ us (i didn't eat almost anything the whole day - had half a pb&j before the race and one gel... probably not quite enough for a 6 hours AR. Anyway, we got a bit lost ... OK, a bit much :) oh I can laugh now, but not then ;) so we headed back w/ 8/10 CP which i heard put us in first 3rd of the teams. Not too bad. So, looking forward to a bit more training and next race!

had some awesome beers after (never had fat tire in a can before!) which was great addition from last year and hung out w/some teams and caught up w/ Melaine. Good to see old friendly faces...
