Orienteering race (Extreme-O) 2:45:00 [3] 6.8 km (24:16 / km)
shoes: Inov8

Extreme-O, Hard Labor Creek, Team StumpKnockers

This was a very well planned (I can tell the organizers spent a lot of time on details) and it turned out to be a very special event. Any adventure race organizer would be lucky to have one of those guys at their side.
We did not enjoy however the crawling in the culverts, in the mud, or under the building, and really could do without.

Some of the elements they used:

1) take an azimuth to some clearing and then identify the control using a picture

2) UTM plotting -> we were all trying to figure out which side of the lake the control was gonna be...well, it on a island in the middlle of it, we kayak to, but some young folkes "walked to it"

3) picture orienteering...from picture to picture

4) at the start you only got instrauction to 1st control...same to second, you better not get lost :)

5) a map that was transioning from regular orinteering map to aerial and back

I went to quite a few adv races, but never seen some of these elements. I dont know the results cause I can't find them posted, but it doesn't matter anyway. I'd love to do it again...but no culverts!

Orienteering race 1:05:00 [4] 5.2 mi (12:30 / mi)
shoes: Inov8

GA Cup - Day 2, Hard Labor Creek

Start again next to the river, by now I knew the deal :) Still manager to stay dry till the marsh on the way to control 8, the all bets were off. I was really trying to shoot east of the marsh, but somehoe ended up right in the middle of it.

Route 3>4 is questionable, but it did the job. Overall I have fater time than yesterday and no big bubbles. Sprint to finish.

I got second place ... out of 2 competitors :):) Robby got 1st! ...out of 1 :):)

We had a good time and went to Atlanta acquarium after. The beluga whales and the beavers were a delight to watch. Also, first time I saw some whale sharks, those things are HUGE, but pretty. We even got to see the dolphin show, which I enjoyed very much! (except the singing and acting ...LOL)

Orienteering race 1:07:00 [4] 4.9 km (13:40 / km)
shoes: Inov8

GA Cup Day 1, Hard Labor Creek

Day 1 was pretty fun, we managed to leave at the same time. My Garmin battery was low to start with so it died between control 3 and 4.

http://www.gaorienteering.org/gadget/cgi-bin/reitt...

Right at the start you saw your first control was across the river, which was more than a creek, so I said "really?!" ...ran along it for a little bit and found way to cross w/out getting wet. And somehow I manager to stay dry the whole day.

Mary Jones caught up with me early on, and we had similar routes till 7>8 where she got distracted by other orienteers and made a mistake. By the time I got to 7 (yes, she was faster :) there was no-one to distract me so I managed to pass.

Everything was quite smooth sailing till last control (12), where I think I ended up a bit high, then "I" got distracted by runners running higher so I went higher...finally I decided to go to clearing and relocate and found the control on the way.

Slept most afternoon after and try to go iceskating in Conyers, but that was not the skating rink I was willing to skate on. (per the administartor: "we only resurface on Monday mornings" LOL).
