orienteering (race) 1:15:58 [3]

flying pig, garr hill long, green m50
got off bus 2 min late and went straight to second call up line, no warmup or potty break
like yesterday, walk uphills, grunt the rest out.
most routes straight, which is about all i can comprehend ! with some slight deviations here and there
notable stuff
because of panic start, almost made 180 degree error at start, so very cautious, sort of sloppy
to 2 went up too high because i think theres an unmapped rootstock, but looked down the slope and saw control. Bill Pullman made same error.
on 3, close to control the large depression was a pond and it freaked me out, stopped to see if i was off track, nasty prickers to the control.
after punching 4 UGH, had something in bottom of rt foot, stopped sat down, took off shoe, took out insole, messed around with compression sock, cleaned out, relaced both shoes, i'm sure i lost a minute, maybe a bit more, didn't think it'd cost me, oopsie.
straight to 10
gasping for air climbing to 11 there were 4 or 5 people wandering about, seemed low, luckily saw the hunters stand, and knew it was further up, i think they all saw it after me and another person near it punched.
12 was the problem, went a bit right of straight and down the small spur between to 2 larger ones, slowed up somewhat to make sure where i was, was really suffering. never even saw the fast route down the road past the control and back to it, ugh.
reviewed w/ bp and isabel again.

orienteering (race) 45:18 [3]

flying pig, bear creek scout camp, green m50
notable stuff:
after talking in past with nadim, dave onkst, and today with the guy parked next to us, bought a pair of the old fart half reading/magnifier glasses, instead of looking at a slightly blurry map and using magnifier. they're great, a bit getting used to but it helped, looking down at footing below is odd.
i know this is going sound like a real weenie, but i haven't been doing hardly any training, so there was mucho suffering, but i like it. walked up nearly every hill or run several steps/walk, repeat. running felt dreadfully slow, and i was gasping for air the whole time, but the good thing was navigating was clean, maybe a few dicey route choices, but i avoided any dreadful mistakes that usually haunt me. the open runnable grueling terrain is what i like best.
on 1,hated crossing the river within the first 2 min, i cant stand getting wet like that.
to 4; actually had a thought that taking trail all the way down then contouring across to the rootstock, it'd be hidden behind, so i attacked off top of hill and could see it below, a happy moment !
to 16 went straight to river then along stream looking for place to cross and ended up crossing between the shooting range symbol (which i thought was a sailboat) and control, went in water up to waist and had to crawl up the cut bank, ugh.
reviewed splits/routes with BP and isabel after.
