Orienteering race 2:16:09 [3] 6.8 mi (20:01 / mi) +287m 17:42 / mi

Well - that was a course. I slowed way down for this race, picking easy routes and sometimes even stopping to really double check my choices because I was determined to have a mostly clean race - and then it all went out the window. I felt like I was doing really well until control #12, where I made a massive parallel error and it just killed my race. (This is where I learn my lesson about the usefulness of compass bearings).

In good news, physically I'm doing way better and am really proud of my running progress (hills still need work though), and my only other big error on the course was partially up to the map. 1:15,000 is not what my brain is used to, so something that I expected to be subtle was not at all subtle and I ended up taking the wrong reentrant, oh well.

It was fun to be out in the woods again and I learned a lot about what I need to work on for the future, so all in all it was a productive weekend. Too bad I missed the extreme-o, but I can only skip so many classes.

Orienteering race 1:53:51 [3] 5.68 mi (20:03 / mi) +193m 18:08 / mi

I made some major mistakes today - and generally speaking my navigation felt really sloppy. I can feel just how rusty it is and I really need to work on making sure I know exactly where I am and exactly what direction I'm going, because I've been guessing more than I'd like to and it means I keep losing time where I shouldn't be.

The hills were killer today, and combined with the rocky ground full of holes, running at a consistent pace was pretty difficult (I suppose hill training should start now so that I won't be quite so dead at the Flying Pig). Hopefully my navigation tomorrow can make up for some time lost on hills - but that seems like a bit of a stretch at this point in time.

Orienteering race 57:58 [3] 3.4 mi (17:03 / mi) +78m 15:55 / mi

I achieved my bare minimum goal (finish in under an hour), and all in all, the course went decently. I got lost a few times, but it wasn't anything huge (I could see the control from where I was standing), and considering that my last technical woods orienteering was at the Flying Pig nearly a year ago and I haven't had much of any orienteering practice in between then and now, I think I can say that I'm okay with my navigation.

Knowing that I lost at least 6-7 minutes with simple navigation errors is definitely annoying, but I was only ~10 minutes behind where I want to be in competition, which is easy enough to make up with some more work.
