Commando-feet first on the horizontal rope (5 pts), retested headstand for tubmling (2 pts) and got 3:01 on the IOCT. Didn't run too hard, APFT later today.

Turns out the APFT was cancelled, huh. Trail run with a little bit of off-trail, ran with Sam H. Some orienteering required.

Map needs a bit of an update:

Route analysis and split analysis coming soon. Goofed up 1 very hard, then had a really good race after that. Turns out the pink streamers go hand-in-hand with the control, didn't realize that at first like the idiot I am and ran right past where my control was.

12 PM

Other (PE117 AI) 45:00 [3]
slept:8.18 shoes: New Balance 608v4

Practiced clinch climb, grapevine climb, hands-only climb, backwards pull over the high bar, full body swing over the high bar, handstand against the wall, forearm stand, ran the IOCT up to the track, practiced IOCT on high bars.

My first corridor-O, 1 was a bit of a goofy mistake, could've made more efficient route choices overall, ran out of time and had to return after just missing 5.

0 pts on the high bar today, but I upped my elephant vault and squat vault each to 4 pts and earned 1 pt on the hands-only climb (maybe could've gotten 3 but I wanted to save something).

Then the IOCT begins. I make my up to the track and complete a lap safely. Then, chaos. 1 runner moves to pick up a medicine ball, me and another try to deposit ours, and another is trying to leave to pick up a button. Elbows were thrown. Laundry carts were rolled down the track. In the distance, sirens. 3:05 after the impromptu combatives lesson.
4 PM

Orienteering intervals 1:09:35 intensity: (25:00 @2) + (29:35 @3) + (10:00 @4) + (5:00 @5) ** 3.48 mi (20:00 / mi) +256m 16:17 / mi
ahr:151 max:186 shoes: Inov-8 X-Talon 212

The team attempted intervals but controls 4 through 8 - with the exception of 7 - weren't there. We did not realize this at any of those controls until consensus was reached based off of the sheer number of cadets there (and now GPS evaluation). Good terrain and good course, I just wish the controls were there!

Ran the IOCT and got 2:59, then practiced high bars for a little bit, showed Baillargeon how to climb the ropes. Then ran the IOCT up until the track and got 1:47. Yikes, gotta work on mounting the high bars better.

0 pts on high bar #2: back pull-up forward roll
3 pts on elephant squat vault
3 pts on squat vault
4 pts on the IOCT. I ran it in 3:18 but I counted and waited 15 seconds for these girls who monopolized the monkey bars to pass. I can get 2:50 by next class.
Midterm grades say I have 36 pts and I needed 38 to get a D, which those 15 seconds could've saved me.

1 mile or so warm-up at around 8:00/mile pace, 6x30s at 5:00/mile pace with 90s rest between. 1 mile or so cool-down at 8:00/mile pace.

GPS wigged the hell out. Accurate distance and time, just the exact course and the pace/location/elevation at each data point it off.

Oops. Ran within not only the circle, but a couple meters of control 3 and...yikes. Notice how you can't actually see the contours on the map. Made for an interesting challenge but I did learn from it.

Had to return back to the start due to time constraints after finding 3.

It was rainy and everything was wet. I wasn't the best at the runner's splits (controls 8 to the finish), but I made up for it on the technical. Why wasn't I under the 10:00/km? A small mistake going into 4 led me to be overly cautious on the technical legs up to 8. Read the split analysis for more detail.

I hand calculated about 6:15 of loss.

They're not letting me move up into red because I didn't run under 10:00/km which is valid, it just means I'm gonna push that much harder on the next orange course I get because I know I am completely capable.

Contour-only map with some notable exceptions (rootstock primarily). For the first 2 controls we were just following our instructor who made an unfortunate mistake on his way to one (misread the north lines). The rest we were instructed to walk, so we did. Minimal drama outside of 4, where we ended slightly SW of our goal and corrected.

Just a practice course to get used to the terrain and running around with a compass mostly. Brisk walk for the most part, saved a lot for the night course that actually counted. No errors. Good run.

10 PM

Orienteering race 1:05:50 intensity: (5:00 @2) + (20:00 @3) + (30:50 @4) + (10:00 @5) **** 2.82 mi (23:21 / mi) +150m 20:02 / mi

I was foolish and didn't record GPS data. Read splits for more detailed analysis. Summary: I did alright but my glasses kept fogging up early on. Then I crossed a river and lost them on the bank because some brush stole them, took a couple minutes on my hands and knees until I gave up and ran controls 10 to the finish without glasses, which was a unique form of orienteering that required extreme caution. After it was all said and done, we went back to the bank and thankfully found them.

We're about ready to take off for Pennsylvania now. My left knee is whacked up from probably Mil Move, but it should be ok by tomorrow. We can hope.

Horizontal Bar #1 - did not test (not required).
Vaulting #2 (Squat Vault) - did not test (ran out of time). Expected 4 pts.
IOCT - 3:38. 0 pts, but a huge (1:30) improvement from what I've been doing, especially on the shelf. My next step is to tackle the bars. I feel great, especially seeing my extra work pay off.

Practiced the shelf about 20 or so times, I'm successful about half of the time and couldn't do it after I did it that many times so I stopped then moved on to the rest of the IOCT. Frustrating, but I learned that I need someone there who knows what they're doing so I can get better quicker.
4 PM

Run warm up/down 8:45 [3] 1.03 mi (8:30 / mi) +55m 7:17 / mi

Practice on the same map but different(ish) course than yesterday. The dotted purple we had to run to before moving on to the next control. Same deal with the camouflaged green tape.

Control 1 was apparently missing and it appears that control 6 was placed on the wrong rock. Overall, the first 5 controls made for some decent training at a decent pace. You can see the mistake I made when running to 4; I got distracted by a different rock. Ran out of time before moving onto 7 (which we evidently didn't miss by far) then ran back.

Better than yesterday? Yes. Was it still frustrating? Yes.

Horizontal rope climb 25ft feet-first (5 pts), headstand and forearm stand (0 pts), IOCT 5:00 (0 points).

I spent about a minute waiting for a girl to get up the shelf and 30 seconds myself trying to, so chop off about 1:30 on that event alone and I'm within scoring range.

Will try to go to Arvin today (not looking good time-wise) but for sure tomorrow.

GPS accidentally paused between 4 and 6.

First day of orienteering practice could have gone better. I trailed a guy for controls 1 and 2, then took over for 3 and 4, then trailed for 5 and 6, etc etc. This means I couldn't run as fast because I had to annotate what I was doing. This also means that half of the controls I was just following for (notice the odd routes).

But that's not an excuse for the early entry at control 3 and the slow down at 7 and 8. By that point we were in the thick of the woods so the reading was much finer. Turns out I was literally on top of 7, but I didn't see it until my buddy pointed it out to me (thanks Charles) about 2 feet away from me. Needless to say the unusual marking system made me much more deliberate (and slower) on my way to 8, so I started looking everywhere for the skinny green tape.

The route is disgusting for all the above reasons, and I can't wait to get a good rep out rather than the one today that I essentially wasted because of stupid decisions.

Map for your entertainment:
