Adventure Racing 3:59:41 [3] 15.79 mi (15:11 / mi)

Nanticoke Headwaters AR with Noah. Temps of 79 at the start up to 91 by the finish. Drove down on Friday night and stayed in a hotel in Seaford, DE - Noah loved this! We got to check-in rather late, but there was plenty of time for us to get ready before the race start. I had to do a quick math problem before we set off on our trek. I had elected to carry a heavy pack to get myself more of a workout on the day, so I wasn't going to be moving very fast anyway.

The trek was very simply, just along trails for the most part, although we did a short bushwhack to cut a corner. Noah moved well here, but I was drenched in sweat from the combo of heat and my sunscreen (which did a great job at preventing any burns). He ran some and trekked some, drinking loads of water. We tried a bushwhack from T6 to save some distance. The woods were clear but we hit a swamp before the creek. I tried to carry Noah across but suck in to my waist only a few steps in. After getting myself out I cancelled the creek crossing and had us cut over to trails and head back that way. Probably wasted between 10 and 20 minutes. We got back after 90 minutes of racing.

The bike had lots of optional points in a variety of places. We decided to hit the points that were mostly bunched together to start, which ended up being the right call. Noah has hardly ridden his bike this year, and he was much slower than usual, to the point that I cut 4 more points off of our route and just made a smaller loop. He was a trooper about the whole thing, but I could tell that he was getting tired. I did have plans for a sneaky CP on the way back, but dropped that in favor of getting more time on the paddle. We took ~1:20 on the bike.

We paddled in a double kayak, but I did all of the paddling. Trap Pond was beautiful, and we got to spend most of the paddling time weaving in and around a cypress swamp! The last two point were across the lake, and I pushed really hard to get us done in time - we finished with only 5 minutes to spare.

We finished 2nd in the Family Division; Allen W. and his young son beat us with the same number of CPs in 2 fewer minutes. Noah had a great time and was extremely proud of his 2nd place medal! This was a lot of fun for me too!

Run at Cheslen. Beautiful weather, but trying to adjust to the humidity. Legs got a bit tired, but I pushed through. Decently happy with the pace despite the struggle.
