Running - Road / Track warm up/down (road) 8:00 [2] 1.03 mi (7:45 / mi) +10m 7:31 / mi
ahr:135 max:153 slept:6.8 shoes: Brooks Adrenaline GTS 7 - 2

A short warm-up before the U.S. Long Distance Champs at Middlesex Fells. I felt a bit tired, but not as fatigued as I had expected I would feel after two days of racing.

Orienteering race (long distance) 1:19:21 intensity: (30:21 @2) + (43:00 @3) + (6:00 @4) *** 11.3 km (7:01 / km) +445m 5:52 / km
ahr:159 max:173 31c shoes: VJ Supra spike US 10.5 - 1

I had a very good run in the U.S. Long Distance Championships, making some but relatively few mistakes and running a smooth race with mostly well-planned and well-executed routes. I did not try to run fast, since I assumed that I would get tired, anyway, and the last two days showed me that making fewer time-loss errors was a higher priority than going faster. Even when I pushed, my heart rate stayed pretty low (often in the low 160s during stints of steady faster running.)

It was a lot of fun to get in a mental groove and orienteer well again after a couple days of struggling with the navigation.

Running - Trail / Grass (some road, too) 27:14 [2] 3.73 mi (7:18 / mi) +20m 7:11 / mi
ahr:139 max:154 slept:9.3 shoes: Brooks Adrenaline GTS 7 - 2

I ran from B/D/D/I's house in Cambridge to the Charles River, then along the river to the Northwest and most of the way back. I walked the last half mile, after I had a fairly sharp pain in my lower left achilles or outer heel, in response to loading/stepping, and it persisted for a minute or so, even after I started walking. Otherwise, my legs felt good, certainly better than they have for the past six days.

Walking (hiking) 1:00:00 [1] 2.2 mi (27:16 / mi) +570m 15:07 / mi
slept:9.5 shoes: Brooks Adrenaline GTS 7 - 2

I hiked the Welch-Dickey Trail with Barb. The trail makes a loop that traverses the two mountains, circumnavigating the broad valley that flanks them to the South. The skies were overcast, but after a brief squall before we started hiking, the rain held off.

The trail tours many areas of bare rock, including cliffs and ledges with sweeping views of the surrounding area. The forest was more open and had more deciduous trees than yesterday's hike along the Crawford Trail, and I greatly enjoyed the fall colors.

Total distance was about 4.4 miles, and total time out was about 2:25, including many stops to take photos or take in the view.

Walking (hiking) 1:15:00 [1] 2.0 mi (37:30 / mi) +730m 17:34 / mi
shoes: Brooks Adrenaline GTS 7 - 2

I hiked with Barb along the Crawford trail from Crawford Notch toward Mt. Washington about 3.5 miles and back. We took it easy, but my legs still felt tired. Most of the hike was in dense forest, but once we reached the top of the ridge, we had some nice views from the areas of bare rock. I hardly ever go for a simple hike; it is something I enjoy, and this was fun.

My heart rate was mostly a bit below what I normally log as training, but I'm fudging some of that time into the 1:15 that I'm logging, because it felt somewhat effortful.

Total distance was around 7 miles, and total time out--including one ~20 minute food/view break and a few shorter stops for views or photos--was around 4:15.
