Run / Hike hills 36:27 [3] 3.58 mi (10:11 / mi) +289ft 9:28 / mi
slept:8.0 weight:118.4lbs shoes: Brooks Glycerin (2022)

Three laps on the rec center hill loop.

Sunny, 50°F, and this bullcrap again for most of the day:

Strength / Stretching 10:00 [3]

Some random strength training stuff in my basement. I know I need to do this but it's soooooo boring.

I drove over to the Mayhoffer-Singletree trailhead and, as I sat there putting on sunscreen, I felt my car shaking and noticed streetlight poles swaying from the wind.

So I said "forget it" and went to Costco instead.

slept:8.0 weight:117.8lbs shoes: Brooks Glycerin (2022)

Ay caramba...in spite of all the running & hiking at SWSW, my scale at home says I came back five pounds heavier. :-\

Neighborhood walk — to Véronique's house to drop off a bottle of limoncello, a loop around Harper Lake, and then back home.

High 50s and sunny.

Well...which is it?!

Orienteering race 1:16:10 [3] 5.17 mi (14:44 / mi) +226ft 14:09 / mi
slept:7.0 shoes: Salomon Speedcross (2022-Wide)

SWSW Day 7 — Three-Loop Motala at Lincoln Park.

Hooray, the blue sky & sunshine were back! Warm enough for short sleeves.

I had some bobbles and wasted more time than I should have at the misnumbered control (16). I was trying to run hard but was feeling sore & fatigued from yesterday's outing (and maybe from the cumulative miles of the week). Also, I spent time taking photos of people on the course.

Big inefficiencies / errors at 4, 6, 10, 13, 16, 17, 21, 25, 26. :-P

SUPER FUN. This area wasn't as cactus-y — somewhere in between Ironwood and Colossal Cave in terms of being able to avoid the painful stuff.

Orienteering race 2:47:33 [3] 5.35 mi (31:19 / mi) +935ft 26:52 / mi
slept:7.0 shoes: Salomon Speedcross (2022-Wide)

SWSW Day 6 — Three-Hour Mini-ROGAINE at Cave Creek.

If it had been just cold & windy or just rocky & steep (oof, those tightly packed 5m contours!) or just lots of cat-claw...I would have enjoyed this more. The combo of all those factors — on top of my lame & lackluster navigating — sapped my motivation and I mostly walked.

I accidentally went past 125 (I was already at the trail junction west of it before I realized) — and the steepness and green-ness made it look unappealing to go back for.

Then I got TOTALLY lost looking for 152 (I was off the north end of the map). Thank goodness I saw JanetT find the control — I was nowhere near where I thought I was at that point. :-\

At 121, I found the streamer but not the control — even though I circled all around twice. I assumed the wind had blown it away, and I moved on.

From 121, I thought I'd go for 138, but then I changed my mind once I got to the trail and reevaluated how much time I had left and how much green was around all the controls in the southern half of the course. So this turned out to be a dumb & inefficient route out of 121 once I changed my mind.

Blah.

Run / Hike 1:02:09 [3] 2.54 mi (24:28 / mi) +95ft 23:38 / mi
slept:8.0 shoes: Salomon Speedcross (2022-Wide)

SWSW Day 5.

Today's event was postponed until tomorrow due to the really grim weather.

Kris, Jan & I took advantage of an afternoon lull in the wind & rain to do a short hike at Saguaro National Park. (Actually, the main purpose as far as I was concerned was to hit the visitor center for postcards....and The World's Cutest Stuffed Javelina!).

Orienteering 1:18:27 [3] 6.87 mi (11:25 / mi) +189ft 11:08 / mi
slept:7.0 shoes: Salomon Speedcross (2022-Wide)

SWSW Day 4 — training course at Ironwood.

Sigh... I did TERRIBLE (I think I was overconfident after having a good run out here last year, and therefore not concentrating like I should have been).

I turned a 5.9 km course into a ~seven-mile meander. Really terrible navigating from start to finish. :-\

I got to the last control and put myself out of my misery just as the thunder and rain moved in.

Orienteering race 1:02:49 [3] 3.55 mi (17:42 / mi) +363ft 16:08 / mi
slept:7.0 shoes: Salomon Speedcross (2022-Wide)

SWSW Day 3 — Cholla Chaser at Colossal Cave Mountain Park (a new map).

I left the trail unnecessarily halfway between F and E (which wasted time — it was difficult to step through the cactus).

Bad route choice through the green from 3 to 4 (should've gone NW to the fence crossing then pond, trail, trail bend, control).

Also, like many others, I got slowed down and scratched up in the painfully prickly brush in the reentrant leading into 5 (maybe the NW-SE reentrant would've been better / less thorny).

But, with the handicap format, I enjoyed beating lots of people I'd normally be far behind. :-P

Another fun day.

Orienteering race 2:19:29 [3] 7.14 mi (19:32 / mi) +1092ft 17:04 / mi
slept:7.0 shoes: Salomon Speedcross (2022-Wide)

SWSW Day 2 — Javelina Hustle at Box Canyon, long course.

I kept up with the mass-start pack for a few controls, then did my own thing.

I skipped #10 on the first loop and #15 on the second loop. (Jan suggested that skipping #14 would've been better — you could follow the trail and then the fence for most of the way to #15. I love that idea but it never even occurred to me...)

Dumb mistake from 12 to 13. Inefficient to 19.

This area looks like it'll be wide-open, easy running, but there are tons of rocks concealed by the grass. Nevertheless, a fun day.

Orienteering race 3:17:00 [3] 7.0 mi (28:09 / mi) +711ft 25:40 / mi
slept:7.0 shoes: Salomon Speedcross (2022-Wide)

SWSW Day 1 — Classic courses at Catalina State Park.

A perfect sunny day (72°F). I opted for the Blue course for maximum orienteering fun. :-P

I finished the course but had dumb brain failures at #3 and #8. I also took time to eat a sandwich, takes lots of photos, and help a lost couple. (But my time would have been slow anyway!)
