Orienteering 2:03:43 [3] 4.36 mi (28:22 / mi)
shoes: inov-8 X-Claw 275

@ Mason Neck

I realized about halfway though today's orienteering that I probably have poison ivy / oak now. I don't know what the plants look like and I'm just walking through all this greenery not caring what anything is. I took a good shower when I got home, but I'm not sure it will take care of it.

Before I drove to Lorton, I did go to the track to measure out my 100m pace count both at my walking clip and at a running clip. I did not have full confidence about how these numbers would translate to moving through the woods, but I had them anyways.

I've been reading the distance on the maps wrong this whole time, I thought the distance measure was at the bottom of the control list, the one in large numbers, but then I realized today that that is not it. It's elsewhere on the map. Whoops. That could be helpful.

Sid assured me a few weeks ago that there would be no elevation gain on this course and it is true, there is no elevation gain, but it makes it harder for me to read the map. If I think I need to rely on the compass and pace counting, I start disregarding the features on the map. Then my drifting errors compound upon each other because I'm not where I think I am. So I tried a bunch of times to find six and seven by backtracking back to the road, and starting from there, but I kept thinking I was at a different point on the road because I wasn't quite paying enough attention to the features on the road.

I thought for a moment about going through the course again and paying more attention the second time around but I need to really want to do that and today in the heat, I was ready to go home, maybe next time.

No long run today - was at the hospital on Friday & then climate marched on Sat - long days and in the heat. I'm beat.

Whacked my left knee hard on a fallen tree and had to really sit down and wonder if I needed to stop. Achy today, I think it's just bruised.
