Ran the WCOC93 Short distance at Harriman, south of Lake Kanawaukee. Gorgeous Fall day, clear blue skies and a crisp 48 degrees. Fall foliage was in full outrageous colours, with lots of people out taking pictures. Saw a few turkeys too.

Perfect day to compete in the World Championships, 25 years ago in October! Greg Ahlswede provided the map and had put streamers at the controls. Can't say I saw all of them, including the start, but pretty sure I found the right control points. The map has not been updated since 1993, but very high quality and largely still correct. I tried hard not to cheat by looking at the course in advance...

Nice walk to start. Forest is very wet, I could barely pass one of the streams coming up from the road. We have no water shortage!

Start to 1: subtle terrain with plenty of mountain laurel around the control, some of which has changed since '93 which was confusing. My only mistake on the course, I veered right just before the control as I saw a boulder field and thought I was just SW of the control. 2 mins.

1-2: Fast running on the down slope to the saddle, across the boulder field, and straight down the hill to the large boulder.

2-3: Steep messy climb up the ravine in a complex boulder field, then found a very runnable area on top of the hills to the SW of the marsh, then turned south and still quite runnable. Boulder field below the hills looked messy and slow and so I think my route choice was faster even though 100-150m longer.

3-4: hugged the hill just to the N at midpoint, saw the cliffs, crossed the boulder field, then it got very subtle in the mountain laurel. Used the boulders to navigate, hesitated inside the circle just N of the control. Probably lost 30s.

4-5: Nice and runnable once out of the mountain laurel.

5-6: Easy run at first, crossed the boulder field, up the hill. Mountain laurel must have changed since '93 as things didn't make much sense, but found the control using the small boulder fields.

6-7: straight on and down the fairly steep hill, thought there were more boulders than mapped.

7-8: Found a good path the whole way, fast run and lucked out finding a path through the green area and across the rather large stream (lots of water in the forest!).

8-9: immediately found an old forest road barely marked on the map which took me to the path at mid point, then open forest and stone hedges as handrails.

9-10: open forest, very easy.

10-11: open forest.

11-12: Across the road at the opening in the fence and then through the little cabins and down the hill.

12-13: to the road and hugged the finish field and tennis court, then up into a messy area with lots of thorns. Control was hidden in a gravel pit or something, took me 10-20s to locate.

13-14: new road and power line, never saw the control streamer.

14 to Finish: field was a soggy marsh owing to all the rain, hope it wasn't this wet at WOC'93!

Several controls were quite subtle and difficult as they should be (1, 4, and 6 in particular). I didn't push running speed and tried to navigate properly after the sloppy start at 1.

Good fun, double the time double the fun (the WOC93 winner finished in 22.34...)
