Wanaque Ridge again, locale of one of my worst races last year. Would I do better this year, I wondered last evening? Well...the first thing that should be stressed is that Wanaque is seriously challenging physically. The inland ice wreaked havoc, there are rocks and rock fields everywhere (and I mean everwhere!), and a good amount of underbrush and fallen trees. It makes for some of the slowest running in the Northeast that I have experienced. Plus the map is from the 80s, "lightly" updated but not so much as to ruin that 80s feel :) For example, contour lines are more like 7.5 meters, not 5...my GPS clocked 150 meters vertical climb from start to the high point between 1 and 2, whereas the map says 110 meters. And for the entire course today (red) climb was 240 meters according to the map, but 375 according to GPS...and I didn't make any serious altitude errors.

The fun(?!) part was that last year I made a ridiculous error from start to 1, picking the wrong path on the way up the steep hill. So when I realized that todays #1 was close to last years, and the start was in the same place, obviously I knew what mistake not to make this time! And? Well, ahem...I am embarrassed to admit, but Groundhog Day! At least I recovered quicker this time and only lost 4 minutes on what should have been a 3-4 minute run to #1.

The rest was better navigationally, though I probably ran even slower than last year due to a lot of rocks being wet and I just didn't want to risk a fall on all these sharp rocks. Small warble on #6, I approached correctly and got within 10m, heavens knows why I didn't see it. And a really nice parallel error to #7, everything fit perfectly, until....

Only real route choice was to #10, straight or around the path, pretty sure the path was faster.

Besides the contour issue mentioned above (them hills really are steep!), the map forces simplification, since enough features aren't accurate or missing entirely. Good exercise, one really should train here more...

I find Wanaque fun, kind of like going to the Dentist fun...feels like an accomplishment upon completion, and don't need to do it again for another year. But will be back!
