Day 2 of Troll Cup, weather changed to 40s and rain. Much better conditions for me! The red course was significantly more technical which made for a fun race. The 395m climb felt less brutal than yesterday's 368.
#1 started with a 94 meter climb including steps up the cliff, according to my GPS. Could have avoided about 10m climb by taking the E path from start which Wyatt advocated. Sloppy on the attack, saw a control and ran for it but not mine, realized what happened and found it quickly. Don't think I lost more than 1 minute on the attack, but I was probably slower than most up the cliff.
#2 was pretty fast as was #3. Angelica Riley caught up with me around 2 (started two minutes behind me) complaining she couldn't see because her glasses kept fogging. We were pretty evenly matched for the rest of the course.
#4 was great once up the hill on the indistinct path, attack worked well as the green area by the control was distinct.
#5 was fast along the path and #6 was a water control (not needed today, plenty of rain in the air!)
Slight wobble on #7 attack, drifted slightly right, 30s.
#8 plan was to stay high but drifted about 3 contours too low from the outset which set me up for the error to come...crossed the path and thought I was up by the cliffs 100m WNW, then just past the second stream made a second parallel error by thinking I was by the cliffs 130m almost due W, crossed the third stream 150m SE of where I thought we (Angelica was equally confused!) were, and not much made sense. Realized we must be too low SE of the control and went up and found it fairly quickly. 4 minutes (?)
#9 was fine, came a little high on the attack but no time lost. #10 was easy.
#11 I drifted too low, not paying attention to the contour lines and lost 15m vertical which my legs weren't happy about making up. Having gone that low I probably should have ignored the path and instead cross to the second large reentrant, but brain was too tired to switch plans.
#12 was very fast and fun downhill, pretty hard to miss due to the prominent reentrants.
#13 elected to stay on the path rounding the big hill to the N, pretty sure that was faster than rounding it to the S and having to run along a pretty steep slope.
#14 to finish, Angelica had been behind me to 13 however somehow got ahead of me to 14, but I managed to sprint past her to the finish. Great race!
Really enjoyed today, fairly clean run except for the drift on #8.
