orienteering (Carp Ridge) 1:30:43 [3] *** 4.8 km (18:54 / km)
13c shoes: Columbia Trail Meister

After yesterday's fiasco, I was desperate for some learning time, even if it was on technical terrain. I'm not a fan of Carp Ridge terrain as it's beyond my meagre navigational skills, which are particularly lacking with so little recent time in the forests with a map. I went slow, used compass, read map, so slow that I actually fell short of controls. I'm used to noting my errors after I'm long past controls. Things were going fine, if slow, until I stopped to chat with Ralph in leg 5. I flailed about until getting back on track before control 8. Skirting green en route to 9, I drifted right and hit control 16 before 9. The rest was straightforward. For curiosity sake, I considered following trail/road to 15 just to check out conditions. Slow and careful is fine for training but too much time, energy and calories had been spent by 13. I ran the road home. Thanks Jeff!!!

When you can't see trail on ground, look for plastic flashes in trees.

Cell phone under map does effect compass.

After nearly 2000k, my shoes were finally put in the garbage.

Note

This is a new low for me on AP and after such a satisfying sprint the night before. I was so looking forward to running on terrain I like and frequent. However I should have learned long ago to put aside my false confidence at South March Highlands and take some compass bearings, especially when it's overcast. I really should do some O training tomorrow.

That was such hard work tonight even though I was so much slower than last week on same trails. I think I'll blame the lack of sleep and a full day of watching Kyle's puppy.
