Mad Trapper - hilly course
Denholm QC
split 46:20
60.6% 11/11+1DNF

The climb is a total guess.
The snow was falling in the -23 windchill but it was too little late to cover the many, many rocks on course. Even so, I was again impressed that Mike could send me out into parts of the forest I'd never visited before, racing under and over maple-harvesting pipes.
I had two layers on torso, windbreaker and shortsleeved technical shirt. The balaclava was off and on depending on the wind. Baby gloves were adequate once the race started. I now think that well-broken-in Columbia Trail Meisters make the perfect snowshoe shoe.
I'm not surprised that I could not negative split. In the second loop, I watched my target go from 1:30 ahead to 2:00 to 2:30 before the final and familiar incline. Because of my knee, my training is minimal. Therefore, if I'm racing longer than 30 minutes, I have no cardio investment. Time is slow because of the knee but only indirectly. It was actually nice to be suffering from something other than knee pain for that last 45 minutes.
I was so distraught by my last place finish, I couldn't stick around after. There was one racer behind me at the midway point but he decided to bail. The placing is obviously poor but I was an acceptable % behind the winner (60% of James' speed).
If I'd only run 5k, I'd have finished near the front, of course.

I wonder if the pain in my knee would be as intense, if I hadn't finished last in the Mad Trapper race - my first legit last place finish.

Due to reduced snow cover, I only ran the field loop (four times). Two layers on the torso was too warm for -16 windchill (-7°).
