I'm working on my speed through the woods. I've got a long way to go and I hope my copy of this map can hang together. Not only is Colin's blue tape still out there, today I found actual controls up except at 3, 18 and 19. What gives?

Of course I blew the first off-trail control, ending up N of 58. I tried going along fences from 36 to 62: mistake. I left the trail for 44 about 40m too far; I've never been able to spot that double linear feature.

From 44 SSW but running so fast I hadn't thought how marsh would be uncrossable pond. The pond forced me back E so I changed plan & headed for trail to 45 when I then encountered a bigger pond. Doh! So I chickened out, headed back up trail to road and to 51 and so on. That wasted a good 5 minutes and time was now running out.

We all wasted time seeking 54. Visibility to 59 was good but that green was SLOW run.

Compared with my 5k race Sunday, I feel much better physically and mentally.

Had I known I would be racing today I would have rested the past two days. That lack of rest does factor in to today's SLOW time. In the future, I must remember to use body glide on the small of my back. Not running regularly, my skin is not calloused.

It was humbling to be so far back in the crowd (the back of the pack is still fast in Newfoundland races) but keep things in perspective: the loss of ground speed since racing in November '07 is less than 2%.
