Backpacking 5:00:00 [2] 8.3 mi (36:09 / mi) +700m 28:38 / mi

Up Weetamoo, Hammond, Liberty, bypassing summit on West Side Tr, and down Piper Tr, with side trip to Camp Penacook. Wore knee supports all the way. Wet and foggy after drizzle on and off overnight. Hairy scramble up wet sloping ledge on Liberty Tr and some nasty bit of wet ledge coming down top of Piper - only slid once. Had to take it slowly and very carefully - noone else on the mountain. Getting pretty tired by the end - good thing I skipped down and up the lower Hammond (4 more miles) - have to do that another time. Otherwise this finishes all the trails on Chocorua. It's a pretty nasty mountain! I climbed it twice this hike and never got to the top.

Biking 1:20:00 [2] 15.5 mi (5:10 / mi)

Back home, same route. Really tired at end.

Note

Is this really the right way to prepare for the Billygoat??? I'll either be blazing fast or painfully slow! Oh well, I've got three days to recover.

Biking 1:15:00 [2] 15.5 mi (4:50 / mi)

Kearsarge Rd, West Side Rd, and Rt 113 to south of White Ledge CG with 20 lb backpack. Stashed bike in woods for overnight.

Backpacking 6:00:00 [2] 12.2 mi (29:30 / mi) +1000m 23:31 / mi

Two days of redlining on Mt. Chocorua. Up Carter Ledge Tr, around Champney Falls Cutoff, down Middle Sister Tr, Up a bit of Carter Ledge again, down Nickerson Ledge to Weetamoo Tr. Camped on lower Weetamoo by stream. Sun through high clouds most of day - great views. Knees a bit sore, so wore Ace elastics on the downhill. Rough trail in places with scrambles and sloping ledge. Great to be staying out in the woods again. Felt a deer tick crawling on me while trying to go to sleep!

Monday May 8, 2006 #
