Cycling 1:00:00 [3] 24.0 km (2:30 / km)

Mount alford loop before lunch at the brewery. bit sore to start with, but good to ease out the legs.

Cycling 4:45:00 [3] 120.0 km (2:23 / km) +1200m 2:16 / km

Mt Lindsay - Lions Rd loop with Dan and James. Massive day out, particularly with my total lack of training. I think I may have done road rides this long before, but not for at least 10 years.

The start was great - the Mt Lindsay highway climb was really nice - perfect gradient. Then the run down Summerland way was pretty fun - trending downhill for 40km. The shop in Grevillia had closed, but we found some water in a tank at the rural fire brigade shed (which may or may not have been responsible for my dodgy tummy later).
Once we turned onto the Lions rd the real fun began. Turned out 80ks of trying to keep up with Dan and James had pretty well cooked me, and I really struggled from there, and it was getting really hot. The climb was hard, but the last 15k run into Rathdowney totally emptied the tank. At one stage Dan was riding beside me to keep pushing me back into James's draft.

Pretty wrecked for the rest of the day.

Note

Spent the week soil sampling near Cloncurry. forecast was for ~40C, so didn't take my running gear, and pool was overrun by screaming kids.

field checked a map for the sporting schools program.

Orienteering 2:00:00 [1]

O camp. putting out controls, shadowing, and running a little bit. very cold and rainy, but nice to be out.
Calf wasn't happy, but it didn't get any worse... although maybe its just passed the tightness back to my hammy again.

pilates 1:00:00 [1]

Orienteering race 18:15 [2]

Club relays at Griffith. Calf sore from the start so just jogged around. Only did 1 course and let caroline and Ryan do the hard work.

Saturday Oct 14, 2017 #

Note

forecast was for rain, so had a sleep in, then had a nap in any potential training time this afternoon. oh well.

Note

After Blair's 300 NOL race tally, I was wondering how many I had done, and figured that it would probably be well over 200... so I added them up.

249

For...
243 completed races
4029 individual NOL points
7 individual wins
5 relay wins
1 dnf (injured)
2 mp
3 races cancelled (by jury), 1 cancelled by fire ban
2 zero scores (1 as a junior, when points went to ~15th, the other when I missed my start by 10mins in an easter prologue, so time put me 54th)
5 as organiser (not included in total)
10 dns from first race as 21E

finished every race in the season - 2002, 2003, 2007, 2008, 2015, 2017
started (or organiser) for every race - 2004, 2009, 2013, 2016

pretty consistent I guess, but that's probably no surprise.

adding up how far I've travelled to get to them all (and how much that's cost) would be a bit terrifying I think!

Chiro. more adjustments to SIJ and upper back. getting closer to sorted now.

Cycling 3:15:00 [4] 40.0 km (4:53 / km) +1800m 3:59 / km

Border ranges circuit, from the Lions Road. Dan, James and a few other guys were doing a 120k ride from Rathdowney - down the Lions Road, then a 40k dirt loop up into the border ranges. I drove down to the turn off from the lions road and did the dirt loop.
A bit of rain during the week meant the dirt roads were about perfect. ranged from hard packed clay to very rough gravel. some epic climbs, which were tough but doable. the descents were pretty steep and I had trouble breaking enough to stay in control. some of the coarser gravel was crazy rough to ride over on the way down and I struggled to hold onto the bike, or even see where I was going. no so much fun.
Had a bit of a rescue mission to help out some of the other guys - they were a bit less cautious on the down hills and cut up a few tyres.

Running race 1:25:00 [3]

Coottha run from the original cyclone HQ in Bardon. With Lance, and Wendy for the first half. Nice run, and felt really good for the first 2/3, but then L calf tightened up and got fairly painful to run. it was pretty much at the furthest point on the run, so just needed to keep going. I thought it was fine (no pain at all for the first part of the run) but obviously I'll have to be a bit more careful with it.
It seems like I've progressed to the next level of geriatric athlete, where injuries overlap instead of getting a little break between them.

pilates 10:00 [1]

token yoga and stretching.

chiro today. some improvement, but I think its going to need another adjustment to my neck.

Wednesday Oct 4, 2017 #

Note
(rest day)

finished work in time to run, but had a nap on the couch instead. contribution to training was to buy a new head torch strap for my ayups.

Tuesday Oct 3, 2017 #

pilates 1:00:00 [1]

pilates. added some exercises to try and sort my neck out, but they were fairly unsuccessful. that's going to have to wait until the chiro visit on thurs.
rest was ok. calf is still tight, but not super sore, so it seems that sunday was just a rogue cramp. much better than the other options.

Orienteering race 46:48 [5] 6.0 km (7:48 / km)

Aus relay. running second as it was well established that I had neither the legs or brains to do anything else. I went out in 8th, but with quite a few runners not far in front. plan was just to not be an idiot, but I managed run to a wrong control before 1. reminded myself sternly about plan and was mostly good from then on (nearly ran from 7 to 9, but realised after about 50m, so no harm done). I was going pretty well to the spectator, but then copped a massive cramp in my left calf and could barely walk for a while. tried to push through and it eased enough to jog at the end. very frustrating as I'd caught both Marina and Olivia but the both passed me again on the way into the finish. Krystal made short work of their third leg runners, so we finished a respectable second behind the ACT.

Running warm up/down 15:00 [2]
