Running long 1:47:00 [3] 15.0 km (7:08 / km) +515m 6:05 / km

Post sleep in long run. not a hot day, but very humid. lots of the new trails so didn't see too many people out.
been a while since the last long run, and had kinda forgotten how nice it is to just cruise through the forest by yourself.

Note

Body hates me. Felt ok running, but not afterwards.

Running 35:00 [3]

Anzac park plod. nice evening - cool but very humid after the rain today. run was better than expected but L itb was a bit tight at the end.

Circuit training 10:00 [3]

chin ups, pushups and side planks. dan has made a chin up bar in the study - two metal brackets with a shovel handle threaded through. the handle twists which makes it a bit harder.

Yoga 1:00:00 [2]

Hot yoga. Cramping a lot, particularly in stabilising muscles in my back and hips. I think I'm a bit salt deficient.

Monday Oct 26, 2015 #

Note

another massive day of field work- today involved 11 hrs of soil sampling, nominally with a hand auger, but ended up just using a crow bar to dig the holes. arms and back quite sore by the end of the day, and zombie level tired.

Sunday Oct 25, 2015 #

Note

Had a little crash yesterday which didn't seem like too much at the time, but I'm feeling very sore now.

Note

L3 controllers course in Melbourne. Pretty dry, going over the same event stuff. The last session was a bit more interesting - looking at protest decisions and reminiscing on the ways (mainly) nol and international races can go to shit, and some creative ways of getting disqualified.

Cycling 2:45:00 [4]

Mtb ride at daisy and cornubia with Dan, Steve, Col and Wil. Tough ride and I was working pretty hard the whole way up keep up. First time I've gone over to the cornubia section. Some really good trails with monster climbs. Completely stuffed by the end.

Yoga 1:00:00 [2]

Hot yoga. Struggled to stay awake for the first part. Stupid comments from the instructor about the start of summer. I think she forgot about the part where she turned the heaters on.

Cycling 1:30:00 [3]

shorter ride, and on my own. I got water drop off duties again, so left the car at the track crossing near mt allen, rode up sunday creek road and back via the summer creek walk section. easier this morning, but I think a bit quicker - better to ride at my own pace, more familiar with the trails and body a bit more used to riding (after I could sit back on the seat). I think yesterday's post ride salt consumption also helped.

Cycling 3:00:00 [4]

adventure ride in Conondale national park with Dan, Col and Ash. Pre ride strategy meeting decided that I got to skip the hour long climb up mt allen and drive around to do the water drop instead. Drove around and left the car on Sunday creek road and rode back to meet the guys. Back to the car, then did the Summer creek section of the great walk, over mt allen and back down the awesome long decent into booroomba creek and the campground.
Struggled a bit with the loose single track to start with, then got a bit crampy on the climb out of Summer creek but generally survived ok. pretty glad I didn't do the extra hour of climbing at the start.

Note

not really any training as I managed to delegate most of the control collection, but a long tiring day anyway. got great feedback on the courses - thanks Mark! and got everything packed up, gear dropped back to various places and home by 3pm. now to finish writing a report for tomorrow.

Orienteering race 47:03 [5] 5.8 km (8:07 / km) +200m 6:55 / km

Aus Relay champs. Third leg. Krystal had come back with Tash on leg 1, and Rachel ran really well on Leg 2, but thanks to the completely rubbish event layout and commentary I had no idea how much lead I might have, so was looking over my shoulder the whole way. Physically didn't feel as bad as expected, and focused on clean nav and avoiding any stupid time losses. I think I did that well - the only hesitation was picking which of the cliffs had actually made it on the map at 6. I thought the course was generally pretty good, and good fun terrain, although the last loop was too easy. The arena layout definitely let the event down. absolutely no atmosphere.

It turned out that we had a comfortable lead - great to pick up the win for the cyclones and take out the NOL comp.

Orienteering race 1:29:43 [5] 10.8 km (8:18 / km)

Aus Long champs. Big day out. I felt like I was overheating just warming up, and my priority over the early part of the course was to just not cook myself. This worked ok until we got out into the sun at 4 and I died a bit. Paid for it big time on the long leg where I completely lost contact early on - super easy spot, but I couldn't remember how many tracks I'd crossed and couldn't figure out where I was. I think I lost a fair bit of time relocating. Eventually got my shit together and took a gel when I passed a kiddie control that had water. This improved the situation a lot, and felt much better over the second part of the course. Krystal had caught me at 5, and I knew she was running a bit behind me which helped keep me focused. Managed to keep it clean through the last part of the course and finished ok.
Biggest time loss was definitely the wobble on the long leg. Other than that pretty happy with the run. Jo is amazing!

Running warm up/down 30:00 [2]

Orienteering race 14:42 [5] 3.0 km (4:54 / km)

Aus Sprint Champs. This all felt a bit rushed and I didn't feel confident in my route choice decisions. definitely took the wrong way to 2, but not sure about several others. spent a lot of time standing still trying to decipher control descriptions - was struggling to keep up and kept reading the wrong ones. calves got pretty tight at the end, but somehow I actually improved my placing over the last part of the course. fun, but I'm just not quick enough for sprint.
