Running hills (Anzac Park TT) 29:19 [5] 5.1 km (5:45 / km)

First proper round for this year (a bit late I know). ran with Dan, Clive and Mat (waited a little while for Mark, but no show) not the most pleasant of runs. it hurt lots, and the creek crossing near the start was full of deep festering mud, which added some lingering stink. only upside was to know that I'm in the 'slow' range, despite months of non-training. lucky easter is late this year.
also good to know that Dan can't magically run faster than everyone else in the universe.

Running 1:20:00 [4]

Night run from Bardon. Had a selection of the usual crew, including Dan, and Connie joined us for the first time - training for xterra. Despite not having run for a while Connie turned out to be pretty fit, and held on till nearly the top of the climb. We did the long loop this time, for the first time in ages, and the run back down the hill turned into a race between me and Dan - particularly the last part down from simpsons falls. how both of us made it down the hill was some kind of miracle cos we were both going way too fast.

Orienteering race 1:22:32 [4] ***** 7.6 km (10:52 / km)
spiked:15/18c

OY at Amiens. First OY of the year, on the 20 yo Amiens map. was a bit apprehensive at the start, didn't feel so great after yesterdays training, and the last time I ran at Amiens I remember it being quite thick. Liz had set the courses for todays race and it turned out to be a scenic tour of the best Amiens had to offer - nice runnable forest (comparively) and some great legs across the bare rock. did most of the course quite well, but had a couple of wobbles due to a tendancy to drift right on compass bearings... at least by the end I knew where to start relocating from!
Reasonably happy with the run, although 10min ks was the goal - unfortunately blowouts in this terrain are punished severely. 10mins behind Clive, and ahead of the other guys. highlight was probably getting within a couple of seconds of Clive on a leg he ran well on!.

Orienteering warm up/down 30:00 [3]

warm up (jog) and control collecting for the warm down

Orienteering long 1:50:00 [3]

long terrain run + control picking at bullecourt. nice run around the doughnut at bullecourt. got really dehydrated and tired after about 90mins so cut it short.

Orienteering 36:00 [4] 3.0 km (12:00 / km)

bush "sprint" training at stanthorpe showgrounds. Wendy set a course for rachel and I, but the map was a little lacking and we both ended up a bit confused and somewhat pissed off. I ended up stopping halfway to relocate my sense of humour in order to complete the course. probably a good outing to get re-familarised with the vagueries of bush sprint maps and the random small stuff that ends up getting mapped.

Note

Went out to cascades to have a look around a section of the map that overlapped between the old amiens and new cascades maps. then we did some mapping of small sections. really good to get a bit of a reminder about what does and doesn't make it onto detailed rock maps. also nice to have a wander on the big rock slabs and check out the view (rather than trying not to get lost!)

Running hills 40:00 [3]

Anzac Park run + warm up and warm down. with Mat, Clive and Magnus.
very tired and slow and cut out the extra loop cos it was getting too dark. I think I'm glad I did it, but wasn't too sure at the time. couldn't summon up the energy to run home - lucky the walk isn't too far these days!

Running 55:00 [3]

Run home from work. hot evening, and home is now further away. spent a fair bit of time standing at traffic lights. I think the taping I'm using for my foot is putting a bit more stress on my calf, so still some work to do balancing it out. hopefully things are on the mend now.

Running 45:00 [3]

night run from Wendy's place, with Dan, Clare, Trev and a bunch of Trevs mates. did the short loop again. Foot not too bad, although getting some pain behind my knee at the end. much nicer run in general than any have been in a while - for the first time in ages felt like I could put one foot in front of the other without it being a total struggle.

thought it had been pretty hot running - turns out it was 29C at 7pm when we started.

Note

more house moving in the rain. succeeded in getting everything moved, and Dan installed bike racks in the garage. the rest of the house is still a disaster area.
big thank you to Clare and Andy for helping move the fridge, and Lance and Wendy for feeding us dinner.

Orienteering race 22:46 [5] 3.0 km (7:35 / km)

Qld sprint champs (aka qld bog snorkling orienteering champs). in the pissing rain at yeronga. great map, but all either super muddy or super slippery, and everyone was taking massive stacks. pretty hesitant around the buildings with lots of slippery tiles etc. very techical around the tafe college, with quite a few pauses to figure stuff out, but I wasn't really travelling fast enough to make mistakes. feeling pretty slow in general and never really got travelling fast - still a bit sick from last weekend I think. also didn't have the greatest preparation as we spent the morning house moving (also great fun in the rain).
good to see rachel get the win - she's owed one after the last few years!

Running warm up/down 20:00 [3]

mostly warm up to try and get the legs going a bit. improve the leg situation from useless to slow.

Monday Mar 14, 2011 #

Note
(sick)

and now I know why I felt so crap all weekend. sore throat, headache etc. oh well.

Orienteering race 1:35:17 [4] 9.9 km (9:37 / km) +415m 7:57 / km
shoes: Inov-8 talon212

NOL long race, Mt Ainslie. nearly gave up on this one when I looked at my map. foot hurt from the start - but mainly from the blisters, and just couldn't get going. decided that I may as well keep going and at least get some training benefit though, so plodded along in long run mode. interesting course given the map, and would have been pretty epic to actually race. only had one mistake - didn't quite hit the control coming down the hill to the butterfly thing. I think I'm glad I finished. pretty depressing run though.

Running warm up/down 10:00 [3]

shuffle warm up. felt pretty lousy so didn't waste too many steps

Orienteering race 41:27 [4] 5.4 km (7:41 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 talon212

NOL round 1 and ACT middle champs at Bruce ridge and CIT. Bit of a crazy run - either stupid fast or stupid confusing. had quite a few controls where I got in the circle and then couldn't see the control through the vegetation. had one stupid mistake where I followed the wrong creek (should have been marked as a water course on the map, not just a gully), and ended up back at 4 instead of 7. lost a chunk of time there. other than that I was a bit slow, and didn't have the fitness to go fast on the running parts of the course. foot held up ok, but got really bad blisters from the taping... fun for the next races!

Orienteering race 28:00 [5] 4.4 km (6:22 / km)

NOL sprint relay. x2 courses. slow. very slow. didn't really make mistakes, but just couldn't run fast enough. clive caught us up a few place each time he ran, but I definitely let the side down. oh well.
fun course, and pretty crazy on the first leg, especially the start!

Running warm up/down 50:00 [2]

warm ups and warm downs.

(injured)

plod. foot hurt.

Running long 1:30:00 [3]

Long run from the Doyles, with Steve, Jacquie, Matt and Wendy. Did a nice tour of ironbark. I like that the hills there aren't as steep as coottha - much more civilized! Very tired today and struggled from the start. had a few opportunities to bail but managed to stick it out. nice swim at the doyles, and great waffles made by paula!
not a great run, but glad i did it.

Running 45:00 [3]

night run from Wendy's with Dan, Mikko, Emily and a bunch of others. still very hot, but nice to get out. foot was ok (small niggle) until the bitumen at the end, then not happy.
